£ Cali Residuals now the PV5 etc are here

Resale will eventually improve for EV as it becomes obvious to buyers they’re simpler and endure more than stinking, leaking, brain damaging fossil-mobiles.

I love driving my EV (Mini Cooper SE level 3), it’s so solid, quick, efficient and pairs well with my solar home setup. Like many I’d love an EV camper that could replace my T6 Ocean and the Mini. They just don’t exist yet. We’re 3-4 years off I’d estimate.

Until then? I think the Multivan is the worst of all worlds but it’s a VW Cali so I suspect residuals might be stronger than we think. That relies on VW pulling their finger out and fixing the multiple electrical/electronic issues.

I’d agree the smart money is probably on the T6.1 still as they’re still holding value pretty well.

At the risk of getting excommunicated or run out of town, there are some pretty cool small caravans out there , is that at opsh?
Oh, they've been on the very long list if options:).

Ladies and gentlemen, could we get my thread back on track?
Thinking about this, you are probably asking a (very) relevant question on the wrong forum. Most on here are Cali enthusiasts and would not want to consider the notion that their very expensive pride and joy might be taking a massive depreciation hit. Most answers will be understandably biased in favour of the Cali. I think if you were to post the same question on a Kia PV5 forum you would see a complete polar opposite of responses and views.

As for spending £80K on a VW? only you can really answer that. Are you prepared to lose money and not worry about it? If the answer is yes then buy it. If the answer is no then you have solved your own dilemma!

That is exactly the situation we are in! (literally, we have a Mini Cooper SE, solar panels, cheap/free charging and would love a leccy van…… but they are not yet a worthy alternative to the VW).

Putting this thread and your other one about short journeys together, you have a Lexus car, a Fiat Ducato Motorhome and you want to go to one vehicle.
You have a dog, you go camping but you also stay in hotels and Airbnbs sometimes.
Why not get rid of the motorhome, your car will fill your needs for everything else except camping.
When you want to go camping, hire a Cali from these people who are local to you.
You will be quids in, no worries about depreciation or anything going wrong with the van. Dog friendly.
If the Unicorn comes along in a few years, swap the car for one then.

You’re clearly in some pain right now so let’s look at the evidence?

You’ve owned enough Calis to know what they are and how they behave.

You’ve read enough arguments and punch ups about the configuration of the 7.

I believe the daft layout of the 7 will do your head in very quickly.

It’s my opinion, and I’ll happily place a bet here and now, the next Gen of Cali (assuming VW still exists?) will be a return to the tried and tested configuration.

(Existing 7 owners, look away now!)
If the above comes true then the 7 will become a niche “ugly duckling” nobody wants.

FWIW, I don’t think in our camping lifetime diesel supply/price will be an issue.
The next Cali will be launched in 2027 - available mid 2028 - and will be full electric! Till than the hybrid 4WD is the best option for you to bridge that gap.

Ouch! That is probably the best suggestion yet, but it might not go down well……..

Yeah, had another look and they’re conversions not Calis anyway. Someone will be hiring proper ones though.
A wise man once told me only own things that appreciate, everything else hire when you need.

I'm toying with sinking £80k into a PHEV Cali, but obviously have my worries.

In 2019 I sold an 2017 Ocean thinking that residuals were about to tank and I clearly got that spectacularly wrong!

My logic then and somewhat now is that Calis retain values so well because they have such a long serviceable life and they only evolve gradually, giving 30+ years of demand easily. But electric vehicles were on the horizon, even if useable vans were a long way off.

But now the Kia PV5 (and now the 7) is here and the timetable to viability looks different

I'd speculate the next Cali will be electric, or they'll be a fully electric model, not just a PHEV. If that's right, how will diesel, petrol and PHEV Calis look even 15 years down the line, and what will that do for residuals?

The new Cali PHEV suits my current needs very nicely, but I'm aware it's likely never likely to garner the same love that the previous (fully 'T') models did. Might it get squeezed between the loved T4,5,6 and the next fully electric model?

I'd be interested in your thoughts. I don't need any "just get on with your life" advice. I'm doing that, I'm just curious about this thought experiment.

I’m not being funny but how fit is the dog ?
If he/she is up for a good walk I would get a T6.1 ( or T6 or T5 )
Take the van up to the top of the Snake Pass. That climb will get it up to temperature.
Walk out onto Bleaklow or Kinder the other way.
Fit man, fit van, fit dog.
Or go over to Hayfield for variation, that’s a steep climb out of Glossop as well.
I guess what I am saying is get a diesel Cali but mitigate the short journeys as best you can.

You summarised it very well! A little extra detail is my huge heavy emtb that will dismantle and fit in the lexus but would roll quite nicely into a T7/Multivan Cali with one seat removed. I took the bench seat out of my last T5 and stuck in a 5th seat. Thanks

Ah yes, a huge heavy emtb changes everything, I see where you are coming from now. So easy just to stick it in one half of the van.
Regards residuals, if you take it out on PCP at least you have some protection in that you can give them it back it if it’s worth less than the balloon payment when the time comes, although obviously you would hope it doesn’t get that bad.
Anyway good luck with whatever you decide.

Ours was 7p but I looked 2 days ago and they’ve quietly halved it!

I see thats a 2025 tariff, we've been looking at an EV to replace the £100/ week diesel bill but it appears switching to the current octopus offering would give us the reasonable 8.4p charging rate for the car but the usual day rate would be 38.9p which would increase our bill for " normal " electricity by over £100 a month - that eats into the electric car savings by a significant amount.

What! That’s a massive increase! You must use a truck load of kW’s. And don’t forget the whole house runs at the cheap rate for night time so you can shift some of your energy needs to the cheap rate

I also charge the Jackery and Bluetti powerbanks overnight (at the 6.9p per kWh rate) and use during the day too for further savings

Unfortunately the tvs & multiple computers etc are used during the day not early hours of the morning.

I was shocked too at the daytime rate. Quite hard to shift a lot of stuff to night time, normal night usage is virtually nothing.

Kitchen/cooking is quite a biggie that can't be shifted too. We couldn't even set our washer and dishwasher on after 11.30 without upgrading them either so not sure what we could put to use after 11.30.
SORRY @2into1 , going off topic again.

I don’t really care about the residuals.
Life’s too short. Have what you can afford and get out and enjoy this life, with or without family.
I like to have many tools for different jobs.
The Cali brigade won’t give 2 hoots about residuals against any other campervan, thus will keep residuals strong.
Even my ugly duckling ;)

Diesel will be around for another 50 years.
I’ll put a small bet on it.
Black wheels look so much better:bananadance2

Batteries would sort that out, load up at night, unload in the day :thumb
The cheaper option is actually to keep our standard tariff which has an overnight rate of 12p, so pay more per KW for car charging but substantially less than an ev tariff for our normal electricity.

That’s lovely for you.

For the sake of our children’s brain development, our respiratory health and to keep the planet habitable for humans by keeping global heating to a minimum I hope you’re very wrong.
He's not wrong. Half the planet is dependant on fossil fuels without any emissions control and that won't be changing for many years. Also you have skated over the very significant environmental pollution from the production of ev / storage batteries, motors and solar panels. But of course that is not taking place in the western world. Out of sight, out of mind.

That’s lovely for you.

If you feel that strongly surely the sensible thing to do would be to not have a Campervan whether its an EV or diesel, the production of it contributes to global warming & so does the use of it.
No one needs a Campervan - it's purely a luxury item.
