How to Replace Roof Sensors

Yes I just had a look. Seem more difficult to find. I bought an extra set of 4 as spares after mine broke. Seemed a good idea for £48.
I would have thought BMW would stock them for a while. Eastern Europe seems to have lots of spare parts generally but prices will rise if they think there’s a shortage.

I’d grab these if I were you

Says Back Order but worth a try.
Or in EU

There does seem to be a global supply issue for these hall sensors, due to supply chain constraints imposed by EV manufacturer demand. This may continue for the rest of this year but may become available in a couple of months.
Tis a gamble. Might be necessary to get whatever is available if you're in need (and the weather is favorable)

Did anyone manage to open up one of these failed sensors? I wondered if you could identify the hall sensor type inside. My electric bike motor failed due to faulty hall sensors and I was able to order a few for £3 from China and solder them in. Maybe they are moulded in to a solid lump of plastic and not accesible but just wondered.....

One of the other threads has the chip number, from memory it is an Allegro device that isn’t made anymore when I tried to find it. But I am sure other devices would work, I was contemplating 3d printed housing. There is another version with a different housing used on the roof latches that might be adapted.

I think there is a mix of rusty sensor magnets, that are no longer magnetic, but other sensors have failed more comprehensively with the rusty magnet swelling and allowing moisture into the PCB.

Kernow Transporters do a lot of these sensor replacements maybe they have a supplier and might be able to supply?

AI Overview

Alternative roof Hall sensor options for the VW California include the BMW part number 54347190735(originally used for the BMW 1 Series Convertible E88), which is widely used as a budget-friendly and direct-fit alternative to buying a whole new VW wiring harness. [1, 2, 3]

Alternative & OEM-Related Part Numbers
    • BMW Part Number: 54347190735 (Commonly used by VW California owners instead of replacing the entire factory loom). [1, 2, 3]
    • Volkswagen OEM/Related Numbers: 1Q0959121C / 1Q0959121K (Hall sensors used across VW/Audi convertible and roof mechanisms). [1, 2, 3]
    • JP Group: 1185450900 (Position Hall-sensor for elevating/convertible roof cylinders, ref AC854100). [1]
    • VW Factory Loom (If replacing the full assembly rather than individual sensors): 7H7971710 [1, 2]

Key Replacement Details
    • The Dealer Issue: VW officially states that the individual Hall sensors are not sold separately and require replacing the entire pop-up roof wiring harness (7H7971710), which can cost thousands including labor. [1, 2, 3]
    • The DIY Fix: Sourcing the alternative BMW sensor (54347190735) allows an auto-electrician or DIYer to replace just the faulty sensor block rather than the whole loom, drastically cutting repair costs
