Dear all.
Having taken my van into VW for its annual basic service, I was informed that its gear oil is up for replacement at 37000 miles at a price of £495 (VAT included).
Question: is the mileage and price correct and why does the dash not show the need to change the gear oil as it does the service.
Looking forward to your always informative replies.

Chris.

The VW guidance, not requirement, is every 40,000 miles.

It’s for you to decide whether to have it done or wait. Considerations could be to maintain gearbox warranty etc.

Personally, I think every 50,000 miles is fine.

Its a dumb item, the oil level or quality is not measured. I'm a 40k miles sort of chap as its a heavy vehicle so working harder than a lighter vehicle running the same "architecture"

A lot of history on vehicles where the gearbox is sealed for life but you require a new gearbox at 80 to 100k miles at £5 to 7k. (the life of the car not being determined)

Just had a transfer oil change on our X545e at 32k.....not called for, but issues were brewing and it has transformed the drive and efficancy. If they reappear, then its off to BMW for a transfer box under goodwill - nearly a 1000miles in and still all good, so worth the £381 paid for a <1litre oil change

Thank you for your replies, they are appreciated.

What confuses me a bit here is that the VW guy stated “gearbox oil change required at 37,000 miles”. When 40,000 seems to be the more popular suggestion on here and the internet.
I’d prefer to stay on the right side of the law whilst under some form of warranty.
Who’s right?

Thanks for reading this post.

Chris.

Someone on here, sorry can't recall who, managed to persuade their VW dealer to share the official guidance. That stated 40k miles for a DSG oul change at a cost of £308.
Maybe this info could be used to poke your dealer for a better (realistic) charge, whilst perhaps accepting that the change is more or less due?

VW will change the oil but may not include the filter.
I did it myself (30K) but a kit is needed including a pump to put the oil in and the oil is expensive (circa £90) plus the filter is about as difficult to access as it could be.

I'd look for an Independent Garage to get a quote using correct oil.

VAT registered Indy using OEM spec parts maintains warranty

This may be it (can't remember the actual post either)

It appears to me that The VW Guy is quoting the mileage interval directly from a VW database specific to your vehicle. They can enter the chassis number of your vehicle a dn identify the change periods in Miles/Months of the various filters and fluids and belts.

and for that they don't even change the gearbox oil filter....because its too difficult! Had mine done at just before 40000 miles and tbh cant say i noticed any difference...but perhaps that's a good thing!

I have the same VW Commercial After Sales Menu Pricing sheet ( as #10) from 2020, and the cost was £193.80 + Vat and yes definitely 40,000 miles interval.
The VW database information is live, your sheet is six years old. They used to recommend cambelt replacement much earlier than they do now, these things evolve.

Yes but the OP was not asking about cambelt replacement intervals

The filter replacement depends on your particular gear box serial number.

I had my 40k oil change done at a VW Indie .
dealer quoted silly money, would not price match despite advertising price matched, and could not advise if filter would be changed in price - price was a fixed blanket price regardless of filter change of not !

Indie advised my VIN number showed filter was not advised by VW to be changed as part of service, filter was about £20 so both the VW indie and myself decided a filter change could not do any harm and was pertinent.

Some gearboxes, based on VIN number do require changing, some do Not!

Indie recorded the DSG service on VW service record (electronic) so warranty was not an issue
