Hi everyone,
Our California (Ocean, 2016, 204hp) has recently had an oil and filter change (local independent garage). Everything was fine then randomly a couple of weeks later the 'Oil Service Now' message appeared.
With the knowledge that the oil had just been change I presumed the service light was not properly reset. So I performed a reset (pressing the trip 0.0 button, turning on the ignition, then pressing OK to acknowledge the reset), and all was good. A couple of days later the same message popped up on the dash.
This has happened several times, and after a reset the display reads 'oil service required in 0 days/0 miles'.

I have also tried an 'oil' and 'inspection' reset, the inspection does reset the time, but the oil doesn't.

I've searched the forum but couldn't see anything similar to this.
Any ideas on why the oil service wont reset?
Could it be the wrong grade of oil used, a failed sensor or a computer glitch?

Any advise is appreciated.
Thanks.

You will likely need to buy a Carista and do a reset via the ODBC port.

Alot of modern cars will ask for an oil change if it perceives the oil to be contaminated/degraded.

I would be contacting the garage for them to check it.

These engines are too expensive to risk.

As well as all the main functions of engine oil such as lubrication, sealing of piston rings etc etc. …. diesel engine oil also has additives for Cleaning: Diesel engines naturally produce soot during combustion. The oil contains detergents and dispersants that: Keep soot particles suspended in the oil: Prevent sludge formation: Help keep internal surfaces clean. The oil filter then removes many of these contaminants.
It also provides Corrosion Protection I.e. Combustion creates acidic by-products. Diesel Engine oil contains additional additives that neutralise acids and protect internal metal surfaces from corrosion.

So at some stage all these additives become exhausted. I don’t think there is any monitoring of these… I would imagine you would need a spectrum analyzer.

I’m a bit suspicious of VW’s time intervals between oil changes… I personally prefer to change oil and filter every 7,000 miles. For reasons outlined above.

It’s not just lubricating the main engine parts, it’s also protecting the turbo etc.
So the quality of the oil and its additives is pretty critical in my view.… it has to
  • Flow quickly when cold
  • Remain stable at high temperatures
  • Protect the turbocharger
  • Be compatible with the diesel particulate filter (DPF)
Only put the best oil money can buy …. And the engine will last for ever…. Just sayin’

So essentially you’re taking the word of the garage that they actually did change the oil…….?

Thanks for the responses so far.
I have spoken to the garage, and they said the oil and filter was changed (Shell 5w/30), however they are going to double check the spec.
They asked for me to take the van in, so they can run a diagnostic check. Maybe a failed sensor will show up.
However my googling seem to refer to failed sensors flagging up 'low oil warnings' rather than not properly resetting the remaining time/miles for an oil service.

I'll keep you all posted.

Check the spec?? Fabulous. The wrong oil spec won’t make any difference in this scenario.
Like they’re going to go and find the empty containers!
Any garage will just buy oil in bulk. They know exactly what they put in, if they bothered.

I think we have our answer.

Any ideas on why the oil service wont reset?
I have a 2014 5.1 and according to my manual the oil reading won’t reset until the vehicle has done at least 500 miles!
