Armageddon

This ruined my mpg today. I also rename this thread Carmageddon

I’m convinced it’s only possible to achieve a max of 10mpg difference between tickling along at 50mph and driving it like you’ve nicked it.

That can’t be Vmax surely?

Top speed Is around 126mph.
You must drive like a saint, we don't do as well with mpg as you for sure! But we are on Sports setting so that might assist in our poor consumption, I suppose!

Price is what it is... you can either pay it or not - your choice i am afraid... Do we want to pay higher prices ? narp... We're off to spain end of April for 5 weeks, only thing we are concerned about is getting fuel, we know we have 1000km in the tank when full so as long as we have enough to get back to Bilbao we arent that bothered.

We just adjusted our driving style to take things even easier than usual. See below filled up in Bridport a couple of weeks back, drove home, up to Durham and back.. 40.3 avg. usually its about 38.

We did get 47mpg on one short hop from Catterick to Sheffield.

Greetings from Germany, diesel was 2,35€ a litre when I passed the filling station this morning on the way to work.
That's useful info. We are setting off from UK in early May so I will try to find out the relative prices for diesel in UK, NL & DE and then plan to fill up in whichever country has the lowest cost.

Local UK diesel price is Euro.2.09 today, so unless it is cheaper in NL, it looks like we will be best filling up before the ferry. But a lot could change in a few weeks time.

Just using the hybrid more...fuel is minor compared to the knock costs of higher energy and transport that will follow on down the line....
That’s what we do locally, minimum 60mpg hybrid Toyota. Cali in winter 33mpg av (with heater) and 38-40mph summer.

Fuel prices are only at the same level that they were when the Ukraine War started. We did a trip to the Outer Hebrides that year - over 1500 miles done in total - 3 full tanks of diesel. We paid around £1.90 a litre in Scotland (invergarry on the way to Skye, and Broadford on Skye on the way back). When compared to the cost of campsites it’s not all that bad. It was costing £90+ to fill up, as opposed to £60 normally, so probably added another £100 to the cost of our trip overall.

Just fill up as and when you can.

Wonder what the 150ps does v max.
I’ve seen 120 on the clock in a 140se I reckon folding the mirrors in might help. It’s not pleasant at that speed, steering getting a bit twitchy and wind getting past the seals around the doors making it very noisy.

The instantaneous mpg read out was down in the teens.

Did it once just to see what it would do, won’t be doing it again.

it is almost £1.90/l in Fort William now, just reduce use. I cycled tot he start of my hill run today instead off taking the van. 8km saved at cold start conditions.

Luxembourg is worth a slight detour to fill up, especially if you have a 80L tank. 2.01 euro per litre. NL has some of the most expensive in Europe.

We took some diesel on in Denmark yesterday at 17.59 DKK (£2.06) per litre which was much cheaper than Germany. In Iceland it is currently listed at around £1.54 so filling up when we get there (also for the winter grade fuel). Our average MPG for the last 1100 miles has been 45.2 with a peek of 51.9 , flat and clear roads at 90 to 100 KPH helped :thumb apart from the MASSIVE traffic jams around Hamburg

The impact of this war will be much worse than Ukraine. Trump is just realising it and it’s why he’s going into full blown public meltdown. He’s lost control. Arguably, he never had it.

For now, we (UK) continue as normal as we’re still receiving shipments that left the Gulf before the war started. Around 10-12th April, the last tankers to leave the Gulf prior to hostilities will arrive in the UK. After that, no more shipments. Unless we’ve already found alternative sources (and there’s nothing to suggest we have), that’s when the shortages kick in.

Frankly, really surprised the government hasn’t already announced measures to conserve stocks. Compared to many of its peers, the UK’s storage is poor and don’t forget we’ve been shutting refineries lately. Starmer has hinted “it won’t be easy”. It won’t. But it’ll be a lot worse if he doesn’t take some precautionary measures now. I can only imagine he’s hoping that as we move into spring then summer energy demand will drop. I can imagine gas demand will. But diesel?

Even if there’s a peace treaty tomorrow, there will be a gap of at least a month in supplies (the war has lasted that long so far) and shortages for much longer as damaged or destroyed plant and infrastructure are rebuilt.

Keep a close eye on the news and a closer one on your fuel gauge.

He could always just suspend HS2 then, all those thousands of huge earth movers would cease burning thousands of gallons a day pointlessly moving huge mountains of earth back and forth , month in month out, for no apparent reason!!!

Good morning from Slovenia.

Diesel is currently 1.80 per litre, 14 days ago it was 1.52

AFAIK, there is still 50 ltrs per fill per day. Or just go to another filling station and finish the top up.

It is not about shortages it is about Italians and Austrian's hopping across the border for cheaper fuel.

We're off to Rome, via Strasbourg, Innsbruck, Lake Garda and Rimini from 1st May for 3 weeks. I'll report back some of the prices and if there are any shortages or rationing. Like others, we'll just have to suck up the extra cost and pootle more than hurtle, I'm not letting the big orange buffoon spoil our holiday.

Re. The latest shenanigans, how much is this going to affect your plans? Previously booked or in the near future. Fuel prices are becoming ridiculous, and if it carries on shortages will follow.
Such a shame as I’m reconsidering my Euro trip now. Plus pretty sure we’ll see a profiteering hike in uk rates..
a bit too much propaganda, in Poland there is no problem with fuel and a liter of 95 petrol costs 1.38-1.4 Eu
Price is one thing but shortages have me a little concerned about our Euro trip end of April. Reality at the moment is there is no shortage but panic buying is causing short term localised supply issues. No help if you’re deep in Germany and need to get home.
a bit too much propaganda, in Poland there is no problem with fuel and a liter of 95 petrol costs 1.38-1.4 Eu . diesel 1,75

it depends on a number of factors. For example, where does Poland source its diesel from? How much diesel storage does it have (I read China has seven months of storage as over the past few years they’ve been building up reserves)? But also note the lag in shipments.

Europe (and UK) shipments are still arriving from the Gulf as those tankers set sail before hostilities started. In the next week or two, the last tankers to leave before the Gulf closed will have arrived at European/UK ports. And then there will be no more.

So, you shouldn’t be experiencing shortages now. Supply will start tightening after those last tankers are unloaded.

Poland lowered prices at the pump by temporary reduction in fuel tax. Italy did the same as well. I think that Spain did also.
Germany made thinks worse in a typical German fashion of prohibiting things in life. Geniuses in Berlin prohibited gas stations to hike the prices to once a day and only at noon. In practice all stations raised prices "just in case" and to the highest levels ever. In my area some stations charge now 2.49 euro/l for diesel. Most stay at 2.35 . Before the law, which took effect 6 days ago the price was 2.19 or lower. Germany is not lowering tax... it needs money and higher oil prices help the state treasury.

I’m just getting on with it and not letting it ruin any of my trips , life is too short… roll on my trip to Portugal in four weeks

Which is fair enough but keep an eye on the news have a contingency plan.

This is the best way to cope with it. Disruption is now baked in for several months. So, by all means, don’t put life on hold. Plan for the circumstances, keep yourself informed and get on with it.

FULL DISCLOSURE:

Having driven a Tesla company car alongside the Cali, and installed a home charger and solar / lithium storage on the Octopus 5.5p per kWh overnight tariff, we have now sold the Cali and am trying to get out of the remaining lease on the Tesla Model Y to swap to the above.

The benefits of needing no gas, power banks, solar or leisure batteries, plus the silent heat pump being far preferable to the ticking heater fan on cold nights, not to mention dirty diesel prices and DPF / EGR issues, combined with a 7 year warranty (8 years battery) and almost zero servicing costs are just too compelling for us. Oh, and it's just 4.7m long and 1.97 (inc. Pop top) high, so no issues with 4.8m parking bays and aggressive ticketing on the South Coast that boil my blood!

So, apologies if I'm somewhat derailing a Cali forum thread. I have become something of an EV fanboy, and I just can't see why anyone with access to a home charger and 2p per mile motoring wouldn't feel the same way. I see almost zero downside with the new PV5 camper versus the Cali, and a ton of upside and long-term cost saving.

Range looks very limited though. This is a screenshot of the spec of the van from Kia’s website. Load that up with campervan kit and it’s not going very far at all. If you’re then running your cooking, heating and fridge on it without hookup, you’ll have nothing left to drive with.1775486596296.png
