Unexpectedly came across this after taking off the left side undertrays and I'm hoping someone knows what it is and does.

Its marked as a VW/Audi part and it's fitted through the back of the last undertray immediately in front of the left-side rear suspension arm, pointing directly at it (second picture).

The wire to it feeds down through the grommet for the waste tank drain pipe, and I'm pretty sure reappears on the left side of the engine bay, goes across the engine bay and ends up going back through the bulkhead directly in front of the steering column. I haven't discovered yet where it ends up behind the dashboard.

The way the cable is routed through the same grommet alongside the waste drain pipe suggests it wasn't done in the factory, but at the same time the part has VW/OOOO stamped on it.

Any ideas ?

External Temperature sensor for Control Panel.

I thank you sir for explaining :) Weird that the entire assembly seems to be fitted almost as an afterthought. The hole in the undertray seems to be drilled by hand and everywhere else cables have moulded clips yet for this its attached with cable ties. Smacks of something conjured up by British Leyland (wash my mouth out). Anyway, it works and if it doesn't I'll now know where to start looking. How I love this club.

Edit: not so weird if VW started out with a T6 transporter and later added the bits turning it into a California.

There is an external temperature sensor behind the front bumper, common to all Transporters and used for engine management. The sensor you found is only found on the California.
