We all have our trips and travels, so why not have some pics of views from (or of) your Cali?


Here is my spot today

 

[Phase one]

Mont Granier (6342ft) in the Chartreuse - stunning views of the massive cliff faces (c3000ft drop).

Great walk from the Col parking with lovely alpine and woodland flora and some rocks with ammonites 12 inches across (!) and then delicious local food and drink at the Auberge at the Col.

Mont Granier is unstable and has a history of destructive cliff face collapses, one of which buried 5 villages and caused c2000 deaths in 1248 - the rockfall formed the terrain for the small Apremont wine region. There have been recent smaller collapses in 2016 and 2018 which have fortunately stopped short of villages.

Bottles of Apremont have been duly stashed safely in the van.

Limestone caves here contained 1000s of skeletons of cave bears that lived in the region 45000-25000 years ago but became extinct in the ice age. They were enormous polar bear sized animals but were seemingly herbivores and used the caves to hibernate. There is a fascinating Cave Bear Museum (!) and an adjacent Apremont wine shop and local fromagerie just down the road in Entremont le Vieux/Epernay.

Not seen any UK number plates.

Brakes and 4motion had a good workout on the steep little roads

Beynac in the Dordogne France. Woke up to several hot air balloons dropping down to skim the Dordogne river. Quite a site from our bed in the pop top!

Liking the slide out unit…… does that have a single stove & sink too?
Do you pitch a separate tent or take the bikes out, fold the back seats flat, then fold out the mattress?
Understand the Aus Beach model gives virtually a queen sized mattress….

The Aus Beach downstairs bed is the same width as a queen but slightly longer… luxurious! We ordered our Cali with a Riva kitchen and bed unit. The kitchen has a sink, electric tap, 34L water, a 55L domestic fridge/freezer, a twin primus gas cooktop, cutlery draw, and two deep draws. There is no oven so we have a couple of high quality Weber saucepans with lids that work well on the primis. The bed has a board that pulls out across the back seats and provides a full headboard under the mattress. The mattress is a deep double layer foam number to which we add a 7cm topper. We’ve also added a shower/toilet pop out side tent that we pop our thetford in. Lately we have been using the upstairs bed so that we can use the space above the kitchen to permanently store the 2 e-bikes which we have found to really expand the enjoyment of Australia’s outdoors. It also means we can use the downstairs area to sit in when we have the rare wet weather. Also, we have added a pod on the pop up roof to put our inflatable kayak in. Not many calis here… but intense interest from people who see it as we travel around!

Thought I would treck to the Inchavore beach on Lough Dan, Wicklow mountains, this morning and do some open water swimming. But it was pouring rain so settled to looking at the view while reading Project Hail Mary. There are worst way to spend a Sunday.

Super weekend down at Milford On Sea (MuddyCreek Farm) in the New Forest.
Only rained early this morning, so we were lucky with the weather too.
No electric hook up and the leisure batteries lasted, only dropping to 4 bars on the overhead panel. I did do the old ‘start stop off and max charge on’, on our journey down too.

Incredible day off-roading at UltraTerrain in Germany today. We expected heavy rain all day due to forecasts but in the end it was dry until 4PM. This was a training course, and it amazes me how capable T6.1 4motions are! Shame we can’t post videos here. I’ve got some crazy ones.
