Just look at this completely pointless open shelf right in the middle of the VW California T6.1 dashboard
Everything you put there rattles like crazy, slides around, and eventually falls out. Classic “why did they do this?” VW moment. So I decided to fix it properly. I designed and 3D-printed a custom solution that actually makes use of this wasted space.
The result:
  • A rigid but flexible drawer made from TPU — stiff enough to hold its shape, soft enough to absorb vibrations and kill the annoying rattling sounds.
  • A dedicated mounting point on top that lets you securely screw in any accessory you want (phone holder, tablet mount, cup holder, extra storage, GoPro, whatever you fancy).

Now the shelf is actually useful, quiet, and customizable. Big upgrade for daily van life comfort.
Would you use something like this in your California? Let me know if you’d be interested in the files ;) will post it on makerworld as usual.
How you doing with this place ???

It’s almost as if the stylists have the final say in the design process (for reasons nobody has ever understood)?

Looks good, is it possible to get a copy of the .stl posted?

TIA

It's a great design. I have printed a set in TPU and the fit is excellent. Thanks for sharing.

looks really cool, getting some printed for when we are back from current expedition, will report back in "a while" - like June...

Hi @Robert-ert I have just got around to printing your excellent drawer set. However, after printing the small drawer I have run into a problem as the larger drawer exceeds the print area of my Creality (220x220mm) printer. It seems that Bambu printers have a print size advantage!

I am looking at modifying your design to make the smaller drawer 35mm wider and the larger drawer 35mm narrower, however with only the .stl files to work with this is not a quick task.

As this will be much easier to do from the CAD file is it possible for you to make an alternative version available with both parts fitting within the 220mm limitation?

Thanks & regards

Chris
