Hello Everyone,

Just had our first weekend away in our new T7 "Vinny" and I thought I'd share some thoughts and perhaps get some useful feedback or tips.

Most things feel thoughtfully designed and just easy to use. Easy to drive and park (mostly, though we only have the rear view and I instantly miss the birds eye/360 that we had on our old car), cruise control is excellent. Audio isn't great but nor is it terrible. I had expected better though especially when it comes to bass, which is distinctly lacking.

Set up with the pop top up and the front seats swivelled into camping mode, we felt right at home - cosy but not cramped. The storage solutions are really well thought out, and the inclusion of so much kit as standard made everything a breeze.

Three of us in the van (wife & I, plus our son) all slept well. I went up in the poptop this time and with just a sleeping bag and a pillow slept way better than I expected, it is surprisingly comfortable. We noticed when trying things out that the downstairs bed was a bit firm so put a topper on (that we already have) and made it a lot better.

I find the camper control panel a bit awkwardly placed and don't really get why those controls are not also available on the main infotainment system (I know you can install the California app, but so far not been successful in doing so) - however the systems are pretty responsive.

The kitchen is...interesting. I don't think we'll actually end up using the burner much and not having any option to cook outside as standard is a bit of a shame. It's nice to have two doors, but given it seems quite typical in the UK that you reverse in and your awning is on the left, it means you're always going through the smaller gap and if the table is set up it's blocked entirely. Of course this will vary by pitch but in this case the next pitch had their car quite close to the edge of their area (nothing wrong with that!) so we didn't use that door. I'd probably have just preferred the kitchen on the other side I guess, but over time my view of that may change. We had a spare silicon mat which pretty much fits exactly over the glass top - I can see a 5 year old damaging that quite quickly otherwise.

Locking and unlocking, particularly at night, needs some finesse, probably on my part.

The video guides said to turn off the isolator switches when doing hookup - is this really necessary?

We noticed sometimes charging from the USB ports was inconsistent, that's something we'll look more into.

Overall, a great first weekend away and the first of many adventures. We'll complement the van with a drive away awning, a foldup table for cooking with an external gas burner and some form of bbq, and probably a bit more storage.

PS - Why Vinny? We tasked our 5 year old with the name. At first he said Vanny. Our mates already have Vanny...so in his creative mind, Vinny was the next logical option. Other names suggested were Connie and Broccoli (lol) but after the first trip, it's Vinny Ocean.

You have to enable the rear USB ports from the control panel.
Your guess is as good as mine!

Ah ha, well, there we go! thank you, know I know for next time.

Which incidentally will be next weekend!

We’ve done the same with the induction hob for outdoor cooking. Bought another smaller folding table for cooking on that the leg height can be adjusted so it’s not uncomfortable to stand at leaving the larger table to eat at. Stores in the boot easily

Our awning is on the other side and we have a driveaway awning for the “kitchen side” and the space between the van and the awning will be used for the BOXIO bog in a box.
For outdoor cooking we’ve got a CADAC 2 burner hob and campingaz 907 bottle.
I don’t use the app as I like to keep things simple.
2 doors are handy and givres options.
Best to start out like you’ve done and add things as necessary

Same colour van here, been away a couple of times now. Partner slept downstairs and says she finds it fairly comfy. I sleep upstairs so unless it’s blowing a gale I guess we will stick to that. We have duvalay sleeping bags which are from our old van.

We’ve kept it simple for now, be a few more trips before I decide on what extra to buy. I wouldn’t mind a drive away awning but Im not sure If I could handle one having seen someone struggle the other day packing theirs up.

Have only used the hob for boiling water and browning toast on the ridgemonkey. One thing I am considering buying is a DJI 1000 power bank which is new to the market, not big at all but will allow an induction hob powered up to 1000 watts. Reviews on it are pretty consistent.

App is good in fairness on the phone.

I’ve not isolated the switches when hooking up, no issues noted (yet).

I had a wobble with the van when i first bought it as there was an issue with the child lock and central locking but credit where credit is due to VW centre had it resolved within a day of getting it back to them.

Off to north Devon for a few nights soon.

Will keep it simple for now.

Look forward to your updates in the near future.

From a T6.1 Vinnie to a T7 Vinny ,welcome . First trip sounds great

We bought a £25 induction hob and put on the fold out table in the outside position for cooking outdoors, saves on frying bacon smell inside and still have the gas hob for kettle, boiled eggs etc.
That’s a great idea - have you got a link to the induction hob Bongoloidfloyd or the name of the one you bought? I’ve had a look but not sure if the power requirements of some of them will exceed the vans.

Yes I agree a topper for the bottom bed is a must. The vango double induction is just brilliant to use on the small side table, with toaster plugged in on top of actual kitchen unit. The usb points only charge in the back when in camping mode and the front ones don't charge when in camping mode. I also thought I would prefer kitchen on other side but after having it for a year now it all makes sense when accessing the fridge and cooking on the outdoor induction hob. I've just downloaded the Cali app on the infotainment system and it's brilliant to see how level the van is and also to remember to switch on and off fridge. It's well worth it, California Chris has little video to show how to do it! Enjoy your new T7, it's magic.

Hi, I wouldn’t actually reccomend the one that we bought as I cocked up the measurements. It was meant to fit under the cutlery tray but it’s too wide.
The power seems fine, it does get very aggressive and I’ve not tripped anything yet!

We got back from our first trip in our van named Goose. (another grey van)

I noticed the USB charging going off and on after every trip out I had to select camping mode again. We were off grid for 3 days and the leisure battery was at 35% on the final day powering the fridge and the odd phone charge. Very impressed with this in such hot temperatures. Here are a few beginners mistakes I made.

  1. The 230v sockets only work when you have a electric hook up. We took a induction hob to cook outside the van which was useless. Lesson learned. Luckily every day was BBQ weather
  2. The water tanks come out of the factory with the drain open. I reversed up to a hose, filled up, then emptied 29 litres across the campsite returning to my pitch.
  3. The bottom mattress definitely needs a topper for adults.
  4. Opening the passenger and drivers doors makes revolving the chairs much easier.
Overall I was very impressed with the drive, and masses of storage space. Next trip already booked. With an electric hook up and a topper. 20260523_180156.jpg

One of the sockets runs off the battery but it's limited to 300w so nowhere near enough power to cook on.

Awesome !

Get yourself a Cobb bbq and thank me later.
It’s proper good.
Spatchcock chicken with Sainsburys lemon rub.
Chilli.
Spag Bol. (Cook pasta on the inside hob, no smell)
Full English breakfast.
Just waiting for my Californication Beach to turn up from Breeze.
