Urgh, had my Cali 2 months and some numpty decided to rear end me in their Discovery while not paying attention in traffic . Could of been worse of course as it was only low speed, but frustrating none the less.
Their insurance company has been good though as driver admitted total fault and will pay for everything, including a hire car while it's being repaired and it won't affect my insurance.
Going in Friday for an estimate to a mate in the trade to see exactly what's needed.

Take ‘em for every penny they’ve got!

That’s deffo two new chairs. An absolute miracle they completely missed the bumper! Oh the irony.

Unfortunately it will affect your insurance! When you renew you have to divulge you’ve been involved in an accident in the last 5 years and your insurance will be effected whether it’s a none fault claim or not! You are deemed a higher risk! Been there and got the T-shirt!!!

I've yet to open the tailgate, as the lock is knackered to check for internal damage to the chairs and my camping gear/shelf etc. There is some minor damage to the bumper protector, so that's going on the list for sure and the impact managed to pop out one of the rear parking sensors, so get an error now, also on the list...

Yeah I know, I meant as an at fault claim, any reason to rinse you of your money! This is only my second accident (both not at fault) in 35 years of driving and the first (foreign lorry driver side swiped my car on a roundabout, also I was stationary), my policy didn't actually go up the following year, which was unexpected. We'll see, still got 10 months on this policy :thumb

Suggest that if the bumper is damaged, the bodyshop check for any structural damage below the van.

Yes thanks, I will make sure it gets a proper check over, I dont want to miss anything, especially if they're paying for it.

Been there, done that. Only the 80 year old woman took off before I could get any details! Contrary to other’s comments, my insurance did not go up.

Insurance will not be affected by infrequent non fault accidents

It looks like only the door is damaged which is very lucky. But make sure the people doing the work at the bodyshop don't repair the door with metal filler etc. Make sure that they fit & paint a new door.

Sorry to hear your woes

I would insist on a new OEM tailgate (as noted above possibly internal trim / chairs damaged etc)
Panel beating and filler is not the best repair long term.

OEM rear lock mechanism complete,
note the internal trim holding the chairs may break when removing it, (the clips definitely will) Check rear blind undamaged and all parts full salvageable, otherwise you may need a complete new internal trim.

note the outside plastic trim across the rear of the tailgate may not be available!

OEM rear bumper, parking sensor and after market decor trim to top of bumper.

Edit : there is no tow bar fitted, the rear crash bar will have been removed to fit the tow bar assembly, get it checked along with spare wheel carrier and exhaust.

Thank you. Yes everything will be replaced with factory and done to a high standard, including a new tailgate. We're yet to inspect the internals as the lock needs to be cut to open the tailgate, but it's being done by a VW specialist who knows these very well (he's personally owned several) so he won't miss anything.
The insurance company have been very good to be fair and accepted there will be further damage once opened, they actually came out this morning to assess it and I made sure to mention again the internal chairs, trim etc.
Hoping to get the visible damage estimate back today, then it goes into the shop, hopefully this week for complete assessment.
Fingers crossed it's not too bad and everything is available.

If you have the detachable tow bar, just check the ball still fits before you drive away from the body shop. If it's a mm out, the ball may not stay in the bumper. My van is factory lowered and the 80 year old woman who rammed me was nice enough to miss the bumper and tow bar, and just take out the tailgate! Like you, the lock needed cutting out before the tailgate could be opened but the chairs and internal lining were okay and reused. I don't know who your insurance company is but LV was absolutely faultless.

Hi, it does have a towbar, but it didn't come with the towball neck when I bought the Cali. Sorry to hear you've been through the same and fingers crossed all the internals are good and reusable too, it's going in tomorrow to be repaired.
The other drivers insurance company is Direct Line who to be fair, so far, have been absolutely spot on.

Good luck. Mine came out like new and I hope you have the same luck.

When do you get the Cali back?

Hi GollyOlly, new tailgate and all the fittings are arriving tomorrow finally after being approved by the insurance company, all OEM, then paint and the rebuild can begin.
Good news is after cutting the lock open and gaining acces, the inner panel of the tailgate wasn't damaged, so all the trim and chairs, blind, fittings etc all reusable, as I was worried some of it wouldn't be available for my year.
My man reckons about another 4-5 days days he'll have it for, so hopefully next week we'll be back on the road.
Can't wait to get it back, repack and go camping now!
Cheers :thumb

That's great news! I'm sure it will all come out just as new. That sounds exactly like mine....inner liner, chairs, blinds were all okay. I had a couple of scratches on the tailgate before the granny bashed me, so fixing them was the only high point of my incident. Since she scarpered before I could get her details, I ended up paying the excess. Oh well, it's only money and no one was hurt. except for my faith in elderly grannies! Best of luck Bliply.
