Which new tyres for ocean T6.1 4motion

I’ve just swapped my 20s for 17s (OZ Rally Raid 8x17). 235/65 17 Falken Wildpeak AT3WA all season. They’re an excellent tyre too, very robust.

The only other tyre I considered was the CC2/CC3.
 
Getting 4 fitted today, great to have these recommendations . Not cheap (ouch) but ready for our Norway trip in September

I have 235 55 R17 Turanzo T005s at present (from new) and the outside front passenger wear is the well documented pain in the rear even running higher pressures and high class wheel geometry adjustments. I want something ~as good as the T005 in the summer but much less prone to the classic passenger side front wear. Whenever I ask for advice for whether the Primacy 5 or the Crossclimate 4 (both much better than T005) is better for my edge wear problems the advice jumps around. One side saying CC is excellent for edge wear and the other saying the deep tread pattern will be terrible. If they were similar I would go for CC as the winter driving would be better but the advice seems to lean slightly to the Primacy 5. Winter driving has been fine on the T005 so it feels Primacy but would welcome any real world experience please?
 
Our T6 4 motion (199) has been on Michelins CC’s for a few years now after the supplied new Tirana’s were due for replacement!

Same vehicle as you, but we’re on 18s. Running CC for two years now, wear is very minimal. No edge wear but then there wasn’t on the Bridgestones either. Sorry, not helpful but it’s a good tyre.
 
One clarification for those looking at this thread as this caused me a lot of confusion when I changed the tyres.

The CrossClimate and the Agilis CrossClimate (both mentioned in this thread) are different tyres altogether (with very confusing names).

The CrossClimate is a car tyre. You can still fit it on a California provided you get the right size and load rating. There’s been 3 versions of it: the original CrossClimate, the improved CrossClimate 2 released in 2020 and the CrossClimate 3 released last year in 2025. There hasn’t been a CrossClimate 4 yet.

The Agilis CrossClimate is a heavy-duty tyre for commercial vans with reinforced sidewalls and overall construction. It will be more durable if you hit the curb a lot, drive on rough roads or enjoy potholes. But it’s noisier and less confortable. There’s only been two versions: the original Agilis CrossClimate and the new Agilis CrossClimate 2, released last year in 2025 (unrelated to the CrossClimate 2, which was released 5 years earlier). The Agilis CrossClimate 2 is not yet available in the UK or Ireland however (seems to be US and Canada-only for now). So in practice, if you want the heavy duty tyre, you have to go for the original Agilis CrossClimate.

When I went to the tyre shop, I asked them to fit the CrossClimate 3 but they came back and said that the only tyres that fitted my T6.1 were the Agilis CrossClimate. I knew little at the time so I went with their recommendation. But now realise I should have insisted on the CrossClimate 3 since I don’t need heavy duty tyres and was looking for quiet and comfortable tyres for long journeys.

In practice the Agilis CrossClimate are fine. Don’t seem to be any worse than whatever Bridgestones were fitted from factory anyway.
 
I recently had to replace the rear tyres… From what I can gather… essentially two suppliers of tyres in the UK. One had Michelin CC3 available the other had no stock of CC3’s which were my tyre of choice. Incidentally I was informed the Agilis is a van tyre - to which I answered the VW is a van but it was suggested the CC3 was more appropriate :)
 
And the t7 California is based on a car chassis but is called a “multi van”
So is it a car or a van ?

Indeed. That’s the issue and why the tyre place ended up fitting them instead of the CC3.

But “Van tyre” in and of itself means nothing. In practice, in the case of the Agilis CrossClimate, it actually means:

- strong enough for heavy loads as vans often carry heavier loads than cars. Definitely relevant to the California, which is a heavy beast. But the regular CrossClimate comes with high enough load ratings - so there’s nothing van-specific there.
- strong enough to resist frequently hitting the curb or driving on rough roads because vans are often used as delivery vehicles or work on building sites and other challenging environments. Not relevant to most campervanners except if you do a lot of off-roading.

After a scary blow out last week with damage to body work looking to replace all 4 tyres as another one looking to go today!
Cross Climate but whatever you choose I advise you rotate front to rear at least once a year or ideally every 6 months to ensure the tyres wear evenly and all 4 can be replaced together

I know that is the suggested practice but I found on my 4Motion 180 tyre wear was equal Front to Rear and Left to Right within a variance of 0.3 mm, so I never swapped.

I'm jealous. My 4Motion 150 front tires wore significantly more than the rear. I don't think the weaker engine should make a difference; it must be my driving style.

The high powered engines are definitely prone to front wheel spin in FWD format something I never experienced in my 4Motion so it might be that the 4 Motion puts more traction through the rear wheels with the higher powered engines when driven with spirit, something I admit to .

Yes, but mine is also a 4Motion. I wonder if the rear wheel traction on your model was greater than what mine does. It almost has to be.

Agree, as the 140/150 FWD were not prone to front wheels pin and the 180/199/204 were then I presume the equivilent 4 Motion vehicles transferred more power to the rear wheels on the 180/199/204 engine variants to compensate for loss of front wheel traction.

Personally I would only fit self sealing tyres to a vehicle. You will need the XL load version. It was a technology developed by VW. It’s not like run flat with stiffened side walls but features a built-in viscous gel or sealant layer on their inner liner that automatically plugs minor tread punctures (up to 5mm or 1/4 inch) caused by nails or screws

Sometimes it’s not the driver and it’s actually the chassis.
My fwd 2020 Cali ocean fully loaded was very easy to wheelspin. That’s why i got shot of it, after 6 months, in Covid times and made £10k.
I’m 55 and don’t want to wheelspin as you look an idiot.
The 2024 4Motion ocean stopped the wheelspin.
That’s my experience.
My 4.4t fiat based maxi chassis Moho fwd, you’d have thought would be prone to wheelspin, but it’s not.
My fwd t7 cali beach fully loaded, you’d have thought would wheelspin, but it doesn’t, as the chassis is based upon the MQB chassis which is used in the Audi a3, Skoda Octavia, Kodiak, Vw golf and tiguan.
