Looked at my first cali ( 2014) yesterday. Must admit, I was a bit surprised with how many things seemed to show signs of rust overall. I mean, is this normal on a 12 year old van?1000066282.jpg

One assumes, as with many things, it will all depend on how well the PO looked after their vehicle, where it was parked etc.

This one looks like it was parked somewhere salty.

I recently got my middle one a second hand car that has spent its life in South Shields. The amount of rust related issues we have had from the salty sea air has been an eye opener.

I'm just surprised that the main dealer under bonnet visual health check done less than 6 months ago didn't flag something. Or am I expecting too much.

You know the more I look at it, the more I think you are correct. It looks more like corrosion from salt rather than rust. I'm now concerned that if engine pipes under bonnet are like that, what the lower suspension and the bits I can't see are like.............

Agree. There are plenty of good examples out there, I’d hunt a little deeper and look at the ones owners are selling on here for more trusted looked after versions.

The rust is inconsistent... for example (image: top right) the right hand section of pipe is okay, rust is just on the left section ... looking at the whole image.... it's as though something (corrosive) has sprayed just over certain areas of components.

I would probably leave that one alone tbh.
My 2007 is spotless under the bonnet.

I wondered if it’s excessive or not diluted TFR use.

Not sure of your budget but there appears to be some nice T5.1’s advertised on here.
