The Towbar prep socket is normally taped to the inside of the body panel near the EHU/Water filler.
Access via the rear wardrobe gas/water tank or via the rear leisure battery storage area.

Not certain but I believe that it also needs to be programmed in so not just a plug and play job.

I've been told that if you have the Factory Towbar Prep then the relevant programming has been done from the factory.

Hi everyone,
I’m trying to clarify a few things regarding towbar installation on my 2024 VW California T6.1 with factory preparation 1D7, and I would really appreciate feedback from those who have actually done this installation.

Here’s my situation:

I checked with a VW dealer using my VIN and confirmed that my vehicle is equipped with 1D7 (towbar preparation).

However, I have inspected under the passenger seat and I did not find any obvious control module or dedicated towbar wiring, which adds to my confusion.

The correct electrical kit for my vehicle should be 7LA055204A (confirmed by VW), and I also received the official installation instructions.

This is where things get confusing:

• One installer told me that nothing inside the vehicle needs to be removed, and that the wiring is routed externally under the vehicle, using existing factory provisions.
• Another installer claimed that the wiring must be routed from the front to the rear through the interior, requiring removal of seats, trim panels, etc.

In the official installation manual, there are indeed quite invasive steps (removing seats, accessing BCM, interior disassembly), which seem more like a full retrofit scenario, not a vehicle with factory preparation.

My questions for those with real experience:

1. With 1D7, does the towbar wiring already reach the rear of the vehicle, or does it stop in the front area (e.g. under the seat)?
2. Is the correct installation supposed to use an external routing under the vehicle, without dismantling the California interior?
3. Are the invasive steps in the manual just generic instructions covering multiple configurations, or were they actually required in your case?
4. How invasive was the installation on your vehicle in practice?

I’m trying to understand the correct procedure to avoid unnecessary disassembly on a fairly complex and sensitive vehicle like the California.
Any real-world experience would be extremely helpful.

I seem to remember that the wiring for the tow bar prep is taped to the van body near the gas bottle stowage.

However, installers are telling me that with 1D7 the wiring only goes as far as the front (near the driver’s seat), and that cables still need to be routed to the rear.
This is the part I don’t understand.

Full retrofit only.
If Towbar prep is installed from the factory then all wiring + BCM programming is installed BUT the wiring at the rear ends in a Multi Socket taped to the body panel near the water tank. So look for the connector to confirm.

If the full factory Towbar is fitted then the wiring loom from the Towbar socket goes to the right and enters the vehicle via a pre-made hole on the Right forward of the combined water tank drain/gas compartment drop vent, all hidden by a plastic undertray on the Right side.
Access to the Towbar Prep connector would be via the rear wardrobe, remove bottom shelf, and look along the interior surface of the external body panel. Sometimes the tape holding the socket fails and the socket drops down between water tank and body panel.

The factory fitted wiring loom comes from the R passenger seat RHD , below the kitchen/wardrobe unit on the vehicle floor, next to the body panel, to the rear and then taped to the body panel at mid height. Then the kitchen/wardrobe module is installed in the vehicle.

Another detail,I checked further:

• I found the towbar control unit under the passenger seat (5H0 907 383 C), fully connected.
• From there, a wiring loom goes into the floor.
• In the rear area I can only see an OEM loom (label 7LA 971 645), but no obvious loose connector.

Access is extremely limited, I can barely see anything behind the furniture.
