I know why my tap pump isn't working (a cautionary tale)!

Bought our 2015 T5.1 Cali in July last year. The tap didn't work initially, but after plenty of Googling, I found the info on what to try to get the water flowing. After much sucking on the tap (yuck!) and manual winding of the pump impeller, it eventually spurted into life... mostly.

The pump worked intermittently without intervention, but on other occasions while camping, I had to empty the wardrobe, dig the pump out, and manually spin the impeller again until it burst into life. I noticed that when it failed to start, there was no noise from the pump, but it did get quite hot.

Over the winter, I’ve used the heater/fan but never filled the water tank or tried the pump. I have, on occasion, used the sink as a bit of a vanity unit. I went to use it today and realised the tap switch was up very slightly. I pushed it back down—it was only a couple of millimetres—but I heard that "click" of the microswitch which immediately worried me. Had the tap been activated this whole time?

Sure enough, upon opening the water tank, I was greeted with a strong electrical burning smell. I lifted the pump and it’s toast (see pictures). I’d accidentally lifted the lever just enough to operate the pump, but because the impeller was seized, there was no tell-tale whirring noise to let me know it was on. Obviously, I need a new pump now (it was on my list of things to do this year anyway!).

The scorching up the cable looks quite bad. Could anything else have been damaged by that heat? Everything else in the van seems to work and the trip switches haven't activated.

Has anyone else here replaced their pump recently? If so, where did you source yours from in the UK? I need to get it fixed in time for the Califonia meet up next month!!

Thanks in advance.

Sorry some of the text has repeated and I cant edit the post.

Whale GP 1002 immersible pump, about £15 on Ebay. I fitted one about eight years ago and it is still working. It’s a straight swap for the VW pump. You will need to cut the cable to the old pump and use cable connectors to connect the new one.

Thanks Herman for the suggestion.

From doing some googling I had already ordered a Comet 12V Submersible Water Pump VIP 16 LPM Caravan Motorhome & Boat (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001CV02QS/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A3MHVPJC7C9PY6&psc=1) which is apparently a slightly upgraded version of the original with a stronger flow rate.

Must confess to being confused how to get the new pumps electrical wire connected. Some people talk of cutting the original, whereby others seel to thread it through the existing grommet. If im cutting a cable i'm unsure where to cut it?

Thanks

The cable on the new pump should be long enough to pass through the grommet in the lid to the original connection block so cut the old cable on the Non- pump side and use some form of connection block to join to the new pump cable.

Thanks. New pump arriving this afternoon so im trying to do some pre investigation to see if everything else is OK.

Is this the correct fust to check? If so the fuse is OK

Next (and i'm no electrician!) I have tried to see with a multimetere if I am getting any current at the pump connector. I have turned on the tap microswitch but am not getting any reading. Assume something else may be at fault but unsure where else to check (as stated above the fuse is ok, assuming I am looking at the correct one.

Where else can I look. Is it likely the tap/tap microswitch is fried and I will need a new tap??

Thanks in advance

Yes it is a 5 amp fuse but position in fuse box can vary. Check ALL 5 amp fuses.

Sorry, but next daft question. When the new pump arrives how do I know which way to connect the 2 wires. Is it a 50/50 chance and one way will work and pull water through and the other wont? Assume provided I dont run it for long I wont do any damage if its the wrong way around?

Thanks in advance

Luckily the new pump had the same blue and brown wires.

Now all fixed and ready for the Cali meet up in a few weeks.

Thanks for everyones help and suggestions
