We're really not bothered about having an awning attached to our van for when we are having longer trips and like the look of the various decathlon and other gazebo type living spaces.

I know some sites can be fussy if the awning isn't attached to the van specifically (or at least say no gazebos or charge for them - I assume to stop rowdy campers congregating under them) - I was wondering what people's real world experience was?

We started with a driveway and then swapped to a Berghaus shelter. I always thought I would get pulled up on this but after 3 years all ok. At one point I pulled a canopy over to the shelter and tied it off to make it look like it was attached

Have done exactly the same on a few occasions! Always used Gazebo style awnings as found attaching a driveaway such a faff. I’ve only been questioned once when the owner thought we had a tent floor in it ruining his lovely grass - it didn’t! The Berghaus shelter is a good one.
