Adblue - where are fellow T6 owners getting topped up

Interested in your Adblue consumption.
My 204 bi turbo Ocean has covered 8500 miles from new in a year and the ad blue tank has a further range of 9500 miles with a top up amount of around 10 to 12 litres. I have owned from new and this is the AdBlue supplied with the vehicle and no top up by me.

My 2018 150bhp Ocean used 10 litres of Adblue in around 3000 to 3500 miles.

This one 8500 miles same driver, same use why the big difference and half your T6.1’s consumption?

My 2019 t6 150 does around 5500mile per 10 litre fill.

Think I’ll be going to B&Q three times :thumb
Just watch for the shelf life, it can be as low as 6 months. Don’t know what issue ( if any ) there is with aged Adblue :Nailbiting

From Redex (Manufacturer site)
“AdBlue® has an 18-month shelf life from date of manufacture if it is kept out of sunlight and below 25°C. If it is kept below 17°C and out of direct sunlight it will have a 24-month shelf life. Once the bottle has been opened, any remaining AdBlue® will have a shorter shelf life as it has been exposed to the atmosphere.”

Just an update
£10 for 10 litres B&Q finest AdBlue
The batch at my store was made 02/10/2025, so I laid down another 10 litres for next years top up.
The 10 litres was just right, range now 18,000 miles and full AdBlue tank.
£10 for a years emission control.

Yep, did the same.
Stuck one tub in and another in the shed. Although my Merc likes to be fed every 4000 miles…..:headbang

I bought 5 x 5 litre ones earlier this year when they had them for £4. Bargain.

Nerdily, I have logged nearly all my AdBlue refuels since 2018

All refills have either been at a forecourt pump or free* at a service centre.

*I have used just 3 or 4 of my 8 free refills following a software update that nearly doubled AdBlue consumption.

Pump prices are generally significantly lower in Europe. The most recent (€0.419 per litre) was at an unmanned prepay forecourt in Catalonia.

I am new to use of adblue.

So I've been doing a bit more reading. It should be stored at 0 - 30 Deg C and not in direct sunlight, that makes me wonder about adblue stored outside on garage forecourts especially in Europe or a hot UK day. Shelf life is up to one year depending on storage conditions, the date on the bottle or container is the manufacturing date, poor storage degrades the adblue.

Using degraded adblue can cause ecu errors from sensors, correction can involve adblue tank draining and sensor replacement, plenty anecdotal info on line.

I am slightly concerned if I ended up with some degraded adblue the repair costs could be significant, I've heard of £1,600 and that would not be covered by the warranty.

Has anyone on this forum had issues with poor quality adblue or am I being unnecessarily concerned?

You do have a point, however the most likely way of using out of date Adblue is by stocking up more than you can use before the expiry date. I think your best chance of fresh Adblue is indeed the garage pumps where turnover is high.

Thanks, I'm currently inclined to purchase VW adblue, more expensive but any potential problems would be covered under warranty, my local VW have said they will do the top up FOC while I wait.

Currently using circa 1 litre per 500 miles so it's not a great cost issue.

I have had adblue issues with my car just a word of warning if you have a fault stop and check,I made the error of driving 100 miles with the fault to get home, at least 8-9 regens and when I got home the adblue tank was almost dry, crystals coming out of the exhaust and forming on every joint.
A trip.to my local mechanic found the adblue valve was stuck fully open, fortunately for me mates rates and a day of torture we had the dpf and exhaust clean new valve and 2 further oil changes after a couple more regens and all was ok.
Beware

You might be overthinking this ………

It's just chemically-treated cow and pig urine! The tub branding makes not a jot of difference, nor would it invalidate any warranty claim!

I believe the urea is synthetically produced, and I am sure VW would take any opportunity they could to reject a warranty claim so I'd rather err on the side of caution.
