Touch screen and satnav problems

Thank you, that’s a great idea. I’ll make a video to show them and definitely won’t be leaving if it’s not working.
The infotainment system is on back order with no known delivery date. If they diagnose the fault within the warranty period it can be replaced outwith the period.

Or just insist the screen gets replaced - "Sat Nav System's Surbiton" do hundreds per year for VW dealers and they offer a warranty for the repair.

They do an in person at their facility or a postal service.

Just did the DIY fix, £13 screen and £3.99 trim tool from Amazon. Took about an hour being careful, left the CD player attached.
Always slight nervousness with invasive surgery, but worked a treat, no issues
That makes you an honorary electric instrument mechanic, welcome to the club!

Our touch screen stopped working and VW approved garage did some 'tests' and said the whole unit needed replacing for 2k.

I decided to follow the process outlined in this thread, figuring that all I had to lose was a tenner (cost of a digitizer on Ebay) and an hour of my time.

Pleased to report that it all went smoothly and its now working fully! Took 2 hours not 1 and I needed a precision Torx set but that was only £7 from Toolstation - so 2 hours and £17 pounds all in all. Super pleased but a bit annoyed at the garage (who are normally very good).

Thanks to everyone who has contributed above - much appreciated!

But garages, any sort, won’t repair items like the Infotainment Systems, only replace.

Glad to hear you got this sorted :thumb

I've had this issue on two of my previous T6 Caravelle's (not California's); almost all screens of this era have a tendency to fail eventually and as per the earlier posts, it is down to the digitiser delaminating from the screen (the glue breaks down over time).

I guess the 5 choices you have are...

1. Leave it and just put up with it.

2. Replace the whole head unit (this what VW do), generally at a cost of between £2000 and £2500+; see the quote below I got last week from VW to get a new T6 head-unit...

3. Go for a "proper" repair where the screen and digitiser are completely replaced; from my research the cost of this is anywhere between £300 and £600.

4. Go for the cost-effective option and buy one of the digitiser replacements on eBay (or similar); the cost in this case is anything from £10 to £40 and about an hour of your time; there are some companies out there who will do this type of repair for a cost of around £125.

5. Replace the stock head unit with an alternative head unit; I've just done this in my T6 California, I'll post a new thread about it once I've got a few pictures.

I've done option 4 twice now by 2 different companies (on my T6 Caravelle's) and one thing to be aware of if you choose this option is that the screen will very likely end up significantly dimmer once done; not so noticeable when its dark/dim outside but during the day when the sky is bright, the screen looks pretty poor, but at least it works.

I have the same problem, first I thought the problem was with Carplay, but it is the screen.
My unit have a other problem, the time on the head unit is at 0.00 all the time. Anyone with this problem as well?

On my 2nd T6 that had the screen issue, I also had a similar issue with the time, the difference was that the time on the head unit constantly switched between 00:00 and some random but fixed time, 06:13 I think. Whilst I did get the screen fixed, I was never able to sort the time issue; I tried battery disconnect, firmware upgrade, factory reset but no joy.

That is a known fault that requires a part to be changed.

Have a Golf with that issue. (Same pro head unit as T6 ) And yes the Time was 00.00 which occasionally flashed up 6.13 ! Very random presume it's a fault with an IC.

SatNav System Chertsey repaired it whilst I waited (couple of hours)
- they do a postal service

Good to know it can be fixed :thumb

I do recall reading something somewhere that suggested the time issue would reveal itself once the head-unit reached 10 years old (from when the head-unit was manufactured, not when the T6 was manufactured), not sure how accurate that is.

If that were true there would be millions of units affected IMO

I looked into this quite a while ago (not for my California but for my previous T6 Caravelle Gen Six) and I found references to the 10 year thing on both VW Transporter and Skoda Yeti forums.

It would only be for a specific model of the MIB2 unit and a specific software version, so if this were true, there would certainly be a lot of units affected.

I have the same problem with touch screen and my VW service centre confirmed a replacement was required ( The costs have been shown in this thread, £2500 +). It is on order, waiting for delivery. I had taken out the VW all in service plan/ warranty and it will be covered by that. So, if you are thinking about the all in service plan, and your van meets the qualification criteria, it might well be worth considering. It certainly has paid off for me, normally I'm not so lucky..
