BBQ EQUIPMENT RECOMMENDATIONS!

Just want to find the best BBQ product most suitable for touring in my Cali. Compactness is all important as well of course as good performance. I would really welcome your recommendations and advice!

Ridgemonkey Grilla.

Can use gas canisters or charcoal; so you can make a mini fire pit once you have finished cooking.

Folds flat so take up very little space. Easy to clean.

(We used to have a Cobb which was great, as can also be used as an oven but it took up a lot of space with the various accessories)

Ive just got a NomadiQ BBQ after Will and Sarah recommended on California Time. very compact and looks really easy to clean. We liked the look of it as the Mrs is vegetarian, so we can have griddle side each.

We’ve used a Campinggaz Partygrill 400 for the last 18 months. We’ve got the version that takes a regulator and connects to a 907 bottle, but you can buy one with a small disposable canister too. The winning point for me is adaptability - bbq, plancher, wok, burner, and we added a pizza stone this summer. The canister type costs about £80.

Cadac we have three.

1. Cadac 2 cook
2. Cadac safari chef
3. Cadac carri chef

Each has its own purpose, but we never need to take away all three.

2 cook for general cooking.
Safari chef for basic grilling.
Carri chef for party BBQs.

Each is fitted with a quick release, and a single gas bottle can supply two BBQs using a T hose.

Madkon mini or ammo is the way to go if you are old school, use as fire pit too and folds down flat and comes with a tough storage bag.
Not cheap though, but will last you a life time easy!

Some people have different views of what “barbecuing“ means. A lot of bbqs basically griddle the food, which can give it a bbq flavour. Some are more like cooking over fire. If you want to put a lid on for more of a kettle bbq experience then Weber’s Go Anywhere is great.

Lot’s of personal choices here so in the end it will always depend on your own preference.

We have the Cadac Safari Chef 2 which works on LP and HP. With the LP connector we can use the Cali Gas but more often now we just take a couple of canisters with us and use HP.

The great thing about it is it folds small, packs easy and fits in the boot and works well, but it’s not perfect.

The ridged “BBQ” top for it is a massive pain to clean, even if you do it immediately so we just use the flat “frying” one now which works great and cleans easy.

The clicker to ignite is also next to useless so we just have a hand clicker lighter in the Cali that we also use for the main burners too.

Lots of good info posted above. A key decision is gas or charcoal, which will partly be driven by what you want to cook on it. I’ve got 5 bbqs which all have their pros and cons. For camping I generally use either the Weber go anywhere or the cobb. Both are charcoal. Benefits of Weber is that it’s quick to fire up, is great for classic grilling but can be used for some light smoking, and, in particular, doubles as an evening fire pit. Benefits of the cobb are that I cook anything from curry to a full Sunday roast. If I’m away for a week I get sick to death of just grilled food so the cobb is my go to for longer trips. Other benefits are that it runs for about 2 hrs on 8 charcoal coals whereas the webeber will use at least five times this. You can also get special charcoal for the cobb that is ready to grill on in about 5 mins so I always carry 2 or 3 of these in the van door if I’m in a rush or as emergency charcoal. I do have a gas BBQ but only use at home when I need to do some quick grilling and am not worried about BBQing properly (e.g. if I’m going to throw the chicken in a curry and add flavour that way).

Only reason we also have the gas option for the van (Ridgemonkey Grilla) is to cover us in SW France - charcoal not allowed due to risk of forest fire.

We first had a Sainsbury’s bucket bbq that cost £12. This was fun for a few years.

Then my wife got me the Weber Go Anywhere as a present. We used that for a while but then it’s enjoyment to boot space ratio tailed off and we stopped taking a bbq for a few years.

Over lockdown our kids got into bbqs in our garden again so we have resumed taking it with us sometimes.

Another vote for the Cadac Safari Chef 2 compact and very flexible everything from grilled meats and fish to full English fry up. Use it with a second Camping gaz 907 which also provides a back up for the plumbed in bottle on extended trips. Also use a silicone grilling mat cut to shape, much easier to wash up than the griddle.

Cadac Safari chef. Compact and perfect for grilling food that would smoke out the van, fish, meat, etc. Plenty of accessories such as frying plate, pizza stone, lids. Gas bottles available in every European supermarket.

Not too tricky to clean as it goes if you use the Cadac bbq brush.

Can’t talk for this one but I’ve got its cousin the primus tupike gas stove and it’s excellent. This pretty much looks like the gas stove with cast plates on as opposed to pan rests on, which I suppose most gas BBQs are.

Where do you intend going? Charcoal BBQs are banned in a lot of places in France & Spain when there is a risk of forest fires in Summer.

Ridgemonkey Grilla can be run on gas or charcoal.

You just slide out / remove the gas burner bar out to swtich over.

We also have Tupike which I like very much. Nicely made.

It seems you can close the lid on this, a bit like a kettle bbq effect. What would that do on a gas bbq? I suppose it would have an oven effect but not sure it would enhance flavour??
