Failed battery charger

Good morning. I own a 2015 T5.1 California SE. The battery charger has failed and whilst I did find some recommendations to replace this, those links no longer work. Can anybody suggest a replacement for the OEM battery charger (located above the rear leisure battery underneath the wardrobe).

Before replacing it have you checked the battery charger internal fuse? Charger has to be removed, fuse holder next to the Mains kettle type plug.

Failure of the charger is not that common. How do you know it has failed?

Many thanks for the rapid reply. The slow blow fuse you mention was blown so I replaced that but to no affect. I have checked the fuse under the passenger seat and also the kettle lead (tried a new one run from the kitchen side 3 pin plug … other than that, I have performed no further checks I’m afraid.

Sounds as if it has failed.
A few options.
VW

Or get an electronics company to look at it.

It's not clear from here if you actually observed 220V on the input?

Hi there. I didn’t use a multimeter but ran a new kettle lead type plug from the 3 pin plug at the end of the kitchen when on hook up, and still no joy with the charger. I assume therefore it’s not the original kettle lead as I know I get 220v from the end of the kitchen plug socket.

You might ask this guy of he can repair a smps. I forget the details of the charger but from memory I think it may perform some canbus signalling which is a complication.

The 220V is functioning, and charging while motor running, but the control panel doesn’t show the typical EHU symbol when plugged in.

1. There is a 30amp fuse under the Drivers seat .
2. The mains charger on your vehicle should be under the fridge, access via L kitchen cupboard.
On later models it was moved to above rear Leisure battery.
3. The Mains kettle type plug, same type as found on domestic electric kettles,


4. There is a fuse holder alongside the above plug socket on the charger with a glass fuse in it. Charger has to be removed to get at, I think.

Yesterday I tried to find a connection point for a rear leisure battery (as you might remember from another thread recently) and with the normal trial and error (what happens if I turn this and that on…) I managed to pull a switch on the charger. For those interested it’s a switch (On/off temperature sensor) which is Off on default. I somehow managed to pull the switch in ”neutral” resulting in no charging. Does anyone know what this temperature sensor is good for?

Luckily I didn’t have to remove neither the charger nor find the glass fuse. That charger isn’t easily removed I guess.

The specific charger part number seem not to be available anymore. Probably been replaced by another part number.

Good Quality Battery Chargers have sensors that detect battery temperature.
Deeply discharged batteries get HOT and should not be charged until they have cooled down.
If someone knows who the oem is (original equipment Manufacturer) or has an original part number (not VW) I can see if I can find a replacement or alternative to same spec

The OP has sorted the problem and the B version of the charger is still in production as it is still used in the T6 and T6.1 and is a straight swap.

As understand that is a feature not used in the Cali model. The temperature sensor switch is default turned to Off and sealed with a small bit of tape against moving the switch.

Now, I would be happy to receive detailed input on where the N162 relay is located on my Cali SE -05. Or if there’s a better connection point for a rear leisure battery (i.e directly to the charger?). Maybe if someone with the same model year could have a look.
