I'm planning a trip to Germany this December and note that from 2024, M+S Tyres alone are no longer recognised as a Winter Tyre.

Before I look at buying a set of wheels and winter tyres (with the alpine symbol) to use very rarely, I was wondering whether anyone has seen any for hire , or failing this for sale ?

In Germany, All-season tires are considered compliant if they carry the M+S (Mud and Snow) marking and the Alpine symbol (a three-peak mountain with a snowflake), also known as the 3PMSF symbol.

EBay is chock full of used tyres. There are bargains to be had as long as your can inspect before handing over the cash.

We have a set of nearly new 16 inch winter tyres with alpine symbol that we are looking to sell. We paid over £800 but then bought a new cali with 17 inch wheels! Please contact if interested. 07468488044

Thanks for the reply. I've a Ocean which, I understand, would not allow enough clearance for the brakes with 16 inch.

Agh, I just sold my steel wheels with Falken Wildpeak AT3Ws.

If you are looking for an excellent all-round tyre, I highly recommend them. Very compliant on road, very little additional noise, very capable off-road.

Where in Germany are you off to? We are in Schwarzwald and get a fair bit. 20cm / night not uncommon. Pre 4Motion Cali Caddy shown.... FWD was no issue with good winter tyres.

Some good info here you have probably seen:

We fit ours "sometime" in October just after the snow poles arrive and the first car ends up in a ditch after a hard frost. They stay on until "sometime" in March and the snow poles go in April if I remember.
Just get a set of used (1.6mm or greater) on steelies from Ebay or FB marketplace. Not very glam but alles in ordnung...

€350 for example, here:
