Hi there, the plastic material on our awning has split, along the seam. It’s a 2015 SE 180bhp. How viable is it to replace the material with a single piece & do we need to detach the entire unit to do this? Alternatively, would we be better off taking it off & buying a simple canopy that attaches directly onto the side rail??
Any suggestions gratefully received.

If you use search there is a forum member replaced the awning with yellow stripes. Top right.

We had the same problem. Replaced ours yesterday with a one piece fabric bought from the club shop. Did not take awning off van, just changed the fabric. Was fairly straightforward. With two of us it took about an hour to sort. An extra pair of hands would have been helpful at one point, but we managed by using rope to pull the arms together to make the awning more stable when the new fabric was being slotted in.

We did use an Outwell front screen in place of the awning before the repair (slotted in at the front of the awning rail and with legs and guy ropes) but it was no where near as good.

We did our old van the same way, but with that extra pair of hands :thumb

Hi there, our 2015 SE canopy split along the glued joint in the May heatwave, a replacement single piece canopy was purchased from the Campervan Bits shop, the cost was around £350, the awning had to be removed from the van to allow for the replacement to be installed.

Hi, Hogie, thanks for your feedback. I’ve also heard people say it can be done on the van…… I’d prefer to do it that way…. Can’t find any videos either way showing how to do it ‍♂️ It’s the original 2015 Thule cassette.

This forum doesn’t understand emojis, tried to show hunched shoulders of confusion, ha, ha, ha!

Same issue here - glue melted in the heatwave whilst inFrance. Had mine replaced last week. Took it to my camper dealer who replaced it on the bus inside of an hour. I've not been able to wind it out yet, but it's in any event a "new improved" fabric.

By the way, they said that they had the same problem at least 1 to 2 times per week! While I was sat waiting, somebody phoned in asking for a cost estimate for the replacement so that they could claim it on the insurance! Talk about coincidence. So definitely a regular thing.

Hi, apologies for the confusion, I should have clarified that the awning was removed for the installation of the replacement canopy, not must be removed!!

We did ours after having the same problem. I have just uploaded a Thule guide as a pdf in the resources section (How-to guides). It is "awaiting approval before being publicly available", but should be found here: https://vwcaliforniaclub.com/resources/fabric-replacement-on-wind-out-awning.265/

Your model of awning will probably not be the same as the instructions (mine wasn't), but the general principles will be the same. The key is to get those spring-loaded arms tied together.

We have a 2016 van with same problem. Removed awning, reglued and sewed it back together using a domestic sewing machine.

I took mine to Newport to a cover/sail makers and they made me up a new one piece one. They were old school with no website etc but Atwells pointed me their way - there is some Atwell connection to them.

This company can supply material cut to size

I have no experience of the company or pricing

Ours is an original 2015 Thule awning too. We found instructions on this site and followed them. Did not take cassette off the van. See instruction in this thread -

We had the exact same issue with the awning on our 2016 Ocean.

I removed the awning, removed the end cap and fixings to slide out the barrel and remove the faulty material. I then sources the materials to replicate the sun awning but in one piece.

I sourced a new single piece of fabric from Attwoolls Manufacturing https://www.attwoollsmanufacturing.co.uk/product/680g-m²-pvc-coated-polyester-250cm-fabric/

I bought two lengths of keder strip (with the correct diameter beading to slot into the Chanel’s at either end of the awning housing).

I then spoke with a local Camping shop (Walton On Thames, Surrey) who trimmed the fabric to size and stitched the keder strips to each end.

Some great feedback from lots of owners, what a fantastic forum.
Without wishing to sound too pedantic, I have a couple of final Qs;
1) The end cap above driver’s door; is there just 1 screw to release it or is that a 2nd one up alongside the roller??
2) As I need to remove the material & take it to an awning guy, can I retract the mechanism back into the cassette in the meantime, or does it make more sense to remove the entire thing, if I don’t have an immediate replacement??

See photos for ‘end cap’

MANY THANKS
