Waze has sent me down one too many tiny roads

Never had a problem in 10 yrs with my California and RNS510 using the built in VW Satnav. All over Europe , Scandinavia and U.K.
The system in my Multivan is even better especially as you can set a destination on Google maps in the VW app and send to the vehicle .
OK, thanks

Past Summer we travelled through Wales and we were using Waze. We gave the system the sack when we ended up in what looked like a tractor lane leading to a heard of very curious sheep.

Yes, it does. I'm in France and, unlike Scotland, there are gey few passing places.
Sometimes there may be a road end but more usually it's just a bit less mountain on one side with a sheer drop on the other
That makes me shiver just reading this… what I like about Waze is… it reassures me speed wise, live updates potholes etc and optional routes to travel. Used in UK and France and ensures I do not go past POI and get my photo taken. I dread having my photo taken and try to be careful & vigilant at all times.

My ten pence worth is that I will try the next trip with my old TomTom screen mounted navi.

I just remember being able to adjust and check the route on the fly so much more easily than with one of these app based systems.

I think the driving mode just freezes out so many functions, it’s the same with Amazon music.

Sometimes I end up needing to stop to change things.

That must have been one hell of a curb stone to take out steel wheel and tire.

Kerb doesn’t do it justice. My side of the road suddenly became pavement - the kerb filled whole r/h lane. I was only doing 30kph but gave it a right skelp

Google is Abs

I have the same problem with Google. Essentially the algorithm used to calculate your route picks what it thinks is the quickest and it will send you down awful roads because of 1 or 2 mins difference when really it should have kept you on the main road. Google own Waze, and it wouldn’t surprise me if the underlying sat nav tech is the same and that Waze user reports are shared between platforms.
Sat nav tech, yes, data, some. Real time reports are not yet widely shared between the platforms. It’s coming, for sure.
They were both developed in the US and I think road travel there is a lot more straight lines so less likely to happen
Waze was developed in Israel. Google bought it in 2013.
I still use Google as its arrival time accuracy is good, but driving completely unknown routes in France or Spain I can’t 100 trust Google as it will send me down roads I don’t want to be driving on in my van if I’m not careful and be aware of the wider route not just the next turn.

A few years ago I was planning a trip which normally would have routed me through the Mont Blanc tunnel, except that it had been closed for maintenance already several months (Sept - Dec). The alternate route through the Great St Bernard tunnel had a nightly closure for heavy vehicles (ie not my Cali).

Google maps was the only one to get it right. Waze, in spite of being owned by Google, wanted to send me through the closed MBT. Apple maps, Via Michelin and the Auto Club planners all thought the GSB tunnel was also closed to me and wanted to route me around it on a 5 hour detour.

Google maps annoys me no end by wanting to save 30 seconds on secondary roads, but they seem to be the only (free) one able to pick up on emergency tunnel/road closures while you're in transit.

Apple maps, to be fair, has gotten a lot better since then and are able to learn from your driving. It no longer attempts the 30 second secondary road savings that Google Maps still insists on.

That's strange. I get the different choices of route if I'm looking on my phone but not if I'm in the van and looking at the console.
I'll have a play with the settings - but it will take a long time to trust a route again
You can do on the van. When you set a destination it initially comes up with the one it wants you to follow. On the Waze interface on the van screen click routes. Then click all routes. This brings up the. one you are on and two alternatives. I use that to work out which route, from experience, I prefer.

That's Google's advantage - they have the data, not only about planned closures and diversions but real-time from everyone's phones

Waze does everything to save a (theoretical) minute, sending you over shitty roads or small roads through neighbourhoods. I avoid it and use Google Maps.

I would say the same for Google maps ! I wish it had a facility were you could put in a % save time for use of different roads / routes
