Hi all,

I have had my Cali 6.1 since May 2024. However an unusual problem has appeared and I haven’t a clue how to fix it. When using my iPhone as a sat nav it interferes with the virtual dash centre section. I normally have this section indicating speed but it somehow resets itself to indicate direction of travel. It happens most frequently during town driving. On motorways less so. I have attempted to reset it to no avail. I am not sure if it is the van software at fault or the iPhone is causing this problem. So over to all you boffins for some direction if possible.
Many thanks in anticipation.

It’s a really annoying “feature” of Apple Maps. If you use Apple Maps as a sat nav, every time you start it, the virtual cockpit switches to the Volkswagen Maps view. The Volkswagen map will display the distance and time of arrival from Apple Maps as well as the next turn. But it won’t actually display the route on the Volkswagen map, making the whole thing rather useless. One of those really half-arsed features that’s worse than the feature not being there at all.

As far as I know, it’s not possible to stop this from happening.

Only way is to not use Apple Maps at all. Use Waze or Google Maps instead - they don’t trigger the Volkswagen map.

Many thanks for your reply Mehdime. I do apologise for not being quite clear but this problem is happening with Google maps on both my phone and the wife’s phone ( both iPhones using G maps ). I did try waze sometime ago on another car but got fed up with the amount of information being displayed and by voice. I also like the GPS indication of speed on G maps which doesn’t seem to appear on the nav system installed by VW, which is fairly rubbish anyway.
Once again thanks.

I would suggest it's because it expects you to use the sat nav, and at which time it would then show the next instruction on the route rather than direction of travel.
I wouldn't expect there's a way to stop it, but a couple of clicks of the buttons should put it back to the speed in the centre for you. Alternatively, use one of the other digital dash views, which can also be customised in the head unit.

I’ve not noticed this happening, I have the digital mph in the RH “dial”, and don’t look at the centre but too much. But I’ll test it out tomorrow.

When you say towns are a more frequent issue sparked a memory. Around 23/24 our digital display was severely affected by G Maps (and Waze)., along with lots of others on the forum, and other VW cars such as Tiguans. The displays were corrupted and frozen when navigating a route. It was a mismatch between the head units software and G Maps. Gmaps constantly floods the head unit with positional data (ie where the van is located), and at the time, the head unit couldn’t cope. A few updates later (it took 18 months) things are stable (crossed fingers). During this time, moving in urban areas caused instant system chaos (lots of turns), but highways less so (fewer and slower changes of direction). Driving round a roundabout a couple of times quickly broke the system!!

So, I suggest a few things you might investigate.
First, make sure your infotainment system software is the latest release (I or others can act as a reference point if not on the VW app).
Also, see if the problem you have happens only when GMaps is navigating on a route, or just showing a map.
Third, see if it happens when on another CarPlay app, like Spotify or something.
And Fourth, test while using Apple Maps (this was usually stable for us when we had issues, and hence we got a liking for Apple Maps!).

Thanks for all replies. A few suggestions to try there.
Think this may be due to a recent software update by VW or IOS.
I had my digital display on classic mode with gear position to left centre and speedo with digital centre display to right and Overview of consumption in centre.
No change when using Google maps until last few weeks.
Now using Google maps as soon as I start guidance. The centre display changes to VW small map and guidance view.
Doesn’t matter if I change the digital display to another view with route guidance on the right or left the map view appears.
Easy to toggle the left or right view button to get back to your default view for the journey.
However, I am coming round to like this view option as it shows a larger area and congestion alerts that have yet to appear on main display.

There is deffo a setting somewhere that does this. I know because this function vanished one day and I wanted it back. I'll go and have a wander through dozens of menu levels.......

I too thought I had seen this setting but cannot find after doing a detailed search and Nav update unless it is a car play/google.

Ok try this. Hopefully I’ve got the pics in the correct order.
I have Apple Maps active.

I’ve not driven off so I don’t know if motion will override this?

It seems to have moved the direction arrow to the rh dial.

Try toggling this off?

Didn’t matter what configuration I had or (digital cockpit display set as classic or 1,2 or 3 with custom left or right centres) , as soon as the navigation was s started In Google maps via car play, My default centre display changes to the map view.

I can either toggle left or right button to go back to my preferred view or once Google maps no longer active and restart it goes back to my default centre view

Have you tried my last post?

That’s very odd. It shouldn’t have anything to do with Google/Car play as it’s a VW OS setting.

Try a Restore Factory Settings from the main menu maybe?

Def. Odd and only happened in the last 2 weeks and do recall an update available which I postponed and applied during this afternoons efforts to restore this function.
Will try a restore tomorrow when I am functioning again after a 14 hour shift that has just started and report back

It’s not just VW, for the last two / three weeks I’ve had it happen in Fords, Hyundai and Cupra vehicles. So it must be a google or CarPlay thing. Has it happened with people using Android ?

I don’t think it’s related. It’s visible on my system without my phone being present or connected. It’s VW OS. How could a Google update affect this? My iPhone is fully updated.
For reference my van is MY23.

Once again thanks for all the replies, all very interesting. For info there are no software updates showing as available on the van. I am currently running with the following
Hardware - H25
Software - 0330
Navigation - 25.8
I will check with VW to see if they are the latest. Like other users I did have an update on my iphone about 3 weeks ago. To the best of my fading memory I didn’t have the problem before then. I have tried some of the fixes indicated above but there is no change. As the van is still under warranty I will approach the dealer ( Liverpool ) to see if they will carry out a full reset. Not a major problem but it is irritating. Will let you know how I get on.
Cheers.

Surfaced Again!
I have decided against a restore to factory default, as this will delete the primary user and It was a PITA at handover getting this set up at the van centre (handover delayed by 30 mins as it had to be “plugged in” for the VW computer to say No, Maybe, YES .) and get the system to work and allow me to be the first and only primary user on a new vehicle, so don’t want that risk when 150 miles away.

My vehicle is Nov 2024 and also from Liverpool van centre.
Hardware = H25
Software = 0328
(so 1 or 2 updates behind but no waiting updates?)
Nav DB = 25.8
Radio DB = 1.31.44

FWIW I did notice that with the VW Nav showing on the main display and usual setting for digital cockpit display ( without any route planned or guidance active) as soon as a point of interest or notification of congestion occurred on the main screen, the centre display of the digital cockpit changes to the POI on the map or congestion warning indicator on the map.
Again can be changed back to preferred display setting but again as soon as another notification is activated vated the map replaces the preferred display option and has to be manually reset with the left right view switches on the wheel.
I am coming to the view that this is an updated operation.
Finally, has anyone else “lost” the setting option that @sidepod showed in his photo at #15 that is missing from my photo at #16?

That setting may be specific to the Discover Media infotainment system (the one with physical knobs). IIRC that one could display the map either on the screen or on the virtual cockpit but not on both at the same time.

The Discover Pro system (the one with a larger screen and touch-sensitive buttons that I guess you have) always displays the map on both the screen and the virtual cockpit so there wouldn’t be any need for that setting.
