How I miss the good old days.

It’s been ages since someone posted about getting gassed in a French lay-by.

It’s all vehicle fails/battery drains and Cross f…kin Climates these days!!

Gassing myself in Ghent, bad Cornish pasty at Cobham services en route.
Happens every time.
Why oh why do I buy Cornish pasty’s from dodgy service stations.
The ones actually made and sold in Cornwall don’t affect my gas chamber.

I think it is tho. Thinking back over our campervan “journey “ (I hate that term!!!) 16+ yrs ago we left a tent behind in favour of a very simple T4 Westy, non turbo, no air con etc. Just basic adventure fun.

I’m not sure where we are today is any more fun?

Back to the gassing - maybe the current Gen7s aren’t as gullible as we were back in day?

I think it just shows how people's perceptions of prevalence of crimes is so heavily based on what the media chooses to report and what gets amplified on social media.

On the other hand, I've had three incidents in the past year where I've woken up to find my kidneys have been harvested while I slept. It's getting quite annoying.

Someone said Cobham ? Nostalgia for Cobham, Virginia, (very small hamlet near Charlottesville) where years ago I managed a race horse farm. Good old days too.

Our old Early Bay was a joy to drive, everyone waved and it spat out parts if its alternator on every other trip, meaning that I got to know my recovery man very well.
Those certainly were the days

I miss my bay and splittie. Always a lottery if I would make Heston services before something self combusted.

I found my T6.1 excellent in many ways. But souless and lacking the adventure I craved.

Mind you, I don't think in today's world if I broke down on the M4 I would get into the back of the splittie and light up a fag and crack a bottle of red waiting for breakdown recovery,

We were very well advised before our first trip into Europe, that: "If you see someone lying in the road don't stop, which is what they want you to do so they can steal your car, money and the clothes you're wearing. You should drive over them."
Forty years on we still haven't seen a body in the road. Is that because of 'woke'?

Now you're talking! There must be some medical name for when you're driving North on the road it turns out to be South on the map.

1982. Bought a 1969 (G reg) bay camper off a garage forecourt. Drove it in England for a week, then drove to Greece via Yugoslavia. No break down insurance, who needs that with a VW? Stayed in Greece for the summer, then decided to leave through Bulgaria, which had just been "liberated".
Greek border police told us we had overstayed (never did find out why) and were in trouble. Knowing the Greek psyche, persuaded them to let us go, detention was too much paperwork. Arrived at Bulgarian border post, refused entry. "If you have a visa you will be welcome in our country". Returned to Greek border. Much consternation. Eventually convinced them that we would immediately travel west to Yugoslavian border and leave there. At Greek/Yugoslavian border, met a Dutch man who told us there was no petrol available anywhere in Yugoslavia. Bought 50 litre plastic drum, filled it with petrol and put it between the front seats. No problem leaving Greece as during the earlier encounter, the Greek police had written a screed of notes taking up two pages of my passport (must have been favourable). Returned home without further incident.
To me, that is the type of trip experience in the good old days, never been gassed, but often experienced the hospitality of local people, usually very friendly.

Last year had impeller on water pump self destruct, never did find pieces of impeller so we decided not to cancel road trip to Sweden drove there and back no problem, i often wonder where the impeller bits are in the water circuit. This year done nc500 again, had new pop top canvas fitted in cornwall now in Filey

I agree, even my VR6 2001 LWB T4 Eurovan converted by Winnebago and sold by official US VW dealers had some soul/character (or I was younger then) and could dream better. Who knows.
