T6 Raising roof open fault and time to fix!

Hi all
I’ve read a few similar threads but I have a slightly different question.

We’ve got a fault showing on our 2018 Ocean. The symptoms are:

1) roof open icon flashing on control panel when roof looks and feels clised
2) Intermittent chirp of the roof open alarm when driving mostly when pulling off and slowing down to very slow
3) Roof lowering cuts out periodically on the way down (and less often when opening) although always fully closed in the end after a few goes.
4) Error code 1000 on the control panel.

I’ve spoken to Liverpool van centre and the can’t get me in until 20th July and we’re going away to a festival on 23rd which seems scarily tight.

Any views on likely fault and availability of the required parts in the 3 day window they’ll have the van?

Where else anyone would suggest I try to take it to try to get it looked at sooner (I live in Manchester).

Any help really appreciated as I’m really fearful they might not be able to fix it in time.

Roof Sensors, the closed sensors are not correctly working.

VW will want to replace the whole roof harness.

This is the DIY guide using BMW sensors, BMW dealer can supply very quckly or people sell them on ebay.

Am I right in thinking the All In Warranty would not cover this? I seem to remember that camping equipment is excluded but if anyone has views or experience to the contrary I’d be grateful to hear.

My honest view is that the All-In-Warranty should cover this, as it is part of the base van, however the process to get a decision appears to vary dealer to dealer. I had my head unit touchscreen fail, the dealer wanted a to charge for a diagnostic fee, they then had their own internal warranty team access the claim to determine if VWFS would pay, so eventually is was replaced under warranty.

A few things to consider, the formal repair method for VW dealers is to swap the whole sensor loom, this is headliner out, which also means lots of trim out, they then have to remove the old harness which passes through the drain pipe grommets and then the new harness has to be installed and resealed. For me personally, swapping the sensors only is actually the quickest, least invasive route as I would be very wary of replacing the whole loom and the risk of the disassembly / reassembly not leading to other issues.

I would say it is unlikely that the warranty claim will be processed, parts ordered and parts fitted in your 3 day window.

However the roof closed sensors failing is the lesser of the faults as the roof can still be opened, when the open sensors fail you can't operate the roof and it is a much more involved fix as the roof motor has to be directly powered to get to the sensors / loom.

Have you tried clearing the Fault code. It could just be a computer hiccup.

Check Control Panel Diagnostics.

Control Panel Off and wait 30 secs

Control Panel On

Press and Hold R lower button and then press Control Knob for 5 secs.

New Hidden Menu . Scroll to VW Diagnostics.

If there are any codes shown, take note and then Reset/Clear. Pressing R lower button.

Return to Main Menu.

Switch Off Control Panel using L lower button. Wait 30 secs and Switch On.

Try Roof/Heater or Fridge

If the fault clears then off you go.

If the fault won't clear or comes back then definitely Sensors need replacing.

Worth a try.

I had a similar problem and I got in touch with a guy on the Facebook California forum page. His facebook name is Mark Volksvans. He is a Cali owner and is based near Matlock.
To cut a long story short I was booked into Liverpool Van Centre but like you I need the van before the date they gave me. I contacted him, he told me what parts to buy and I drove over the week after and had a cup of tea while he fixed it ( and also replaced my faulty water pump ). I can recommend him for service and price. I saved a fortune compared to what VW would have charged me.

For a bit of perspective on price I believe that VW don't sell the sensors alone, you have to buy the whole roof wiring loom which as a part is around £900. I bought the sensors from a BMW garage for less than £60 and he fitted them and did my water pump for less than half what VW wanted for the parts alone.

Have you thought of Group 1 VW (Trafford park) in case they can fit it in sooner? They are not a California specialist like Liverpool but they replaced my bellows to the 06s version & recently replaced the rear air con unit. If the roof of your van is covered under the all in one that's hopefully more straightforward.
