Good morning. We have a 2006 T5 California and wanted to know what others do to ensure their gas system is safe? Are there any recommendations on what needs to be done and if there are companies that actually service the system. Just concerned that the van is now 20 years old and we have no idea what condition the gas pipes are in!
Thank you

Look at the expiry date on the rubber hose in the gas locker, change if out of date. The rest of the system is stainless steel with no expiry date.

I was talking to my sons new father in law at the weekend, who does a lot of Moho and campervan gas system inspections, certification and is approved by a number of the big manufactures.
He is familiar with the California layout and advised that the 3 items that fail are the gas tap that screws into the gas bottle (often from around the stem of the tap), the Gok regulator and the hose and fittings. He said that commercially he would always replace all 3 items not just the hose at 10 years. In his experience the regulator rarely last 10 years 5 would be a good average, they do have a date stamp it is the very last number printed on the label so the number 26 appears on current club shop stock. Lastly if like me you replace the hose and regulator yourself, he confirmed it is all steel pipe work and fittings so everything has to be done up nice and tight.

We use a caravan/motorhome service man to do our gas check, which we do each year on our T6.1. If you check your insurance you may find a clause about the gas check, if you don’t get it done and get a certificate you’re not covered for fire/explosion connected with cooking/gas system. It costs about £50 per year. Our insurance stipulates a yearly check. We are with Motorvision.

I have yet to see any Insurance company documentation that insists on a Gas Safety Check on a California for the insurance to be valid in the U.K.

There is a Legal Requirement for a Gas Safety Certificate if you hire the vehicle out for payment.

So I presume you also have an annual gas system safety check carried out on your household gas system from gas meter to and including any gas appliances?

We do yes on the home gas system from the meter to the boiler as we don’t have any other gas appliances. I’ll dig out the insurance wording for it, we were told about it by the VW dealer.

We are only covered for fire, explosion or gas leaks if a valid gas safety certificate is provided to the insurer at the time of a claim.
