Starlink mini now £189

To compare, my 5g router uses a few watts and permanently runs off the single Beach battery. Obviously there are times when I can’t get a signal, but always have my phone on a different network as backup. I’ve had over 200mbps download and 100 upload on 4G. A decent 5G reception will give even more, but I could honestly just use 4G and be fine. I can happily work remotely uploading/downloading files and have video Teams meetings no problem. You really don’t need a super fast connection for the majority of use cases.
Agreed to a point, 4/5G is great when you can get it. I’m currently in the middle of Sardinia off grid in the mountains with not a single bar of any cell signal. I despise Musk the man but his tech is great. Sometimes you have to put your principals aside - after all we all drive VW’s the company that produced Hitler’s people’s car!

I asked her (OH) what she thought about another campervan (I’d sold my 6.1, 4M Ocean a year ago, as I had a HA and two stents fitted,
And she banned me from staying out on my own, which was reasonable. )
She said, okay let’s go look.

Went to B’ham Swansway and had a look and she really likes the t7.

We came home and then gave her the good news, I’d already ordered one a week ago ;) :D

lol, made me really lol :)
She’s researching the largest awnings, for grandkids to come and stay away with us.
How do I tell her, I have to remove both rear seats to keep the weight down ;)
Ah damn, then no grandkids can travel with us. ;)

I do the same with an old 5G Three router and a prepaid Three SCANCOM data card - was only £139 for 14 months of UNLIMITED data (600Gb fair usage). This is UK only though.
I have a 5G dongle - two EE 5gb SIMS and steal 45gb off both the kids when we go to France.
Signal is ok but can lag a bit as I reckon they strangle UK sims on their networks.

Yeah, and some of it is pretty explosive!!:talktothehand
Wrong, sorry Kayleigh.

Electric vehicles (EVs), including Teslas, are statistically less likely to catch fire than internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. While EV fires do occur, data consistently shows that the overall fire risk is lower for EVs compared to gasoline or diesel-powered cars.
Tesla's / Musk's own data shows that Teslas using the LPF technology are 11 times LESS likely to catch fire or explode than petrol or diesel cars.

More here from Autotrader if interested in actual facts than anecdotes:

I think Kayleigh's referring to the very expensive fireworks display during the test of Starship 36 last week.

Ah! @Kayleigh my apologies, if so. I probably tend to the defensive when hearing about the 'explosive' nature of EVs, since leasing a Tesla last summer. The ribbing I get from colleagues is endless.

Haha! Yes, that’s exactly what I was referring to, Starship 36! It was indeed explosive!

Starlink mini now available in the UK at £189 on the Starlink website.
I have a gen2, which is mahoosive.
Wanted the mini but wasn’t paying £400.
Just bought it and delivery in 4 days.
£50 a month roam cost. I’ll pause it as soon as I get it.
So Starlink mini arrived today.
I hadn’t realised that you couldn’t use the Starlink app to connect your existing subscription to another dish but need to run a new subscription.
It’s not a massive issue as you can pause the subscription (you have to pay for the whole month) and then activate the other dish subscription to switch back.
It’s a shame they don’t allow the subscription to run across multiple dishes that aren’t concurrently connected.
I would have liked to use the mini when away in the van and the other when at home.

I'm tempted to have it somewhere convenient and then move the Mini between Cali and home use as needed.

I’ve just picked up my Starlink mini from DHL.
Setup in the garden.
Before I switched on, went into my app and paused the 60gb roam.
Switched on the mini.
Let it do its thing. Moved it a bit towards the south and got it right as how it showed in the app.
Cool.
Went into the iPhone app.
Clicked person top right. (Account)
Subscriptions, change service plan.
scrolled down to the bottom, found the 10gb plan.
For £8.
Clicked that one.
Unpaused it. Says your billing cycle is £5.60
And I’m away.

Any difference in performance between the big Daddy and the Mini Me dishes? Is the Mini more position sensitive?

They do a 10Gb Plan for £8?? How come that's not advertised - or am I missing something?
And how come the billing cycle is £5.60? Is that like a part month or something?

EDIT: Think I just found the answer to my second question:
If you are reactivating service or adding a purchased Starlink through a retailer or third-party on your existing account, you will be charged a pro-rated cost dependent on the plan's monthly cost and time remaining on your existing billing cycle.

Yes, have a look in the Starlink app subscriptions.
And yep, part month.

I only got 111 down and 8 up which was disappointing tbh.
I rebooted a few times over the first hour setting up network. 5ghz, takes about 8 minutes to initialise, which is pants.
Then left it for a good 2 hours.
In exactly the same place (in the garden) as the big automatic positioning daddy.
In June 2023 I was getting 213 and 32. On Big daddy.

I’ll do some testing inside the vehicle when it arrives.
As I might be able to cut down big daddy and have it flat mount under the fibreglass roof !

I’ve got 20 days to send mini me back.
Then I can order another in 2 months to test again.
The mini me I got has the grey surround on the outside.

The Mini performance is disappointing. Have you checked others experience? The Marketing certainly makes it sound more capable than what you're actually seeing in real life.

That’s really disappointing Bill. Any idea why? Do you think it is worth it just for the times when you cannot get a 4/5G signal? I’m here sitting in the van in Wild West (London) and getting over 300 on 5G and over 200 on 4G. There are really very few times I can remember that I’ve really needed a signal and not been able to get one.

No idea !
And you’re are right in thinking it’s best I stick with my two sim spitz GLi router with the pucks on the roof.
Thought I’d trail the mini and see if it is a game changer.
It would be, if I was off road for long times.
But the use it would get over the next 5 years doesn’t make sense.

I’ll do something with big daddy and make that work as I still have the 48v - 12v Canada boondocker. Which worked really nicely if I’m ever stuck.
