My T5 2.5 TDI gets a shudder in the front end, it feels a bit like the wheel hopping due to a failed damper but it only seems to occur when going uphill in third gear, maybe a little in fourth, the rest of the time it behaves normally. weird !

I would image your Van is manual & has done over 90k miles? and has never had a new clutch?

The symptoms you report are in line with a failure Dual mass flywheel (DMF), a new clutch assembly will be required.
When stationary & in neutral can you hear a slight rattling noise ?

Here's a search string to assist in your research

Hi, very interesting, my vehicle has done 340,000miles, 100,000 by me, I,m not aware of it ever having a clutch although the previous owner did maintain it very well, I have some history somewhere, I'll have look. However the clutch does work beautifully in every other way, hard acceleration in lower gears etc. I have history of being very light on clutches and have never had to replace one in over fifty years of driving. There is a very gentle tinkleing in neutral at idle but it's been that way for a long time and I thought it was just the timing gears. Obviously, I do not want to replace the clutch unnecessarily, it's not a job I'd want to do just in case as it's not cheap, plus, I'm on a bit of mission when it comes to clutch replacement!

You have the details, tinkling is a give away, it's your van do what u want to do :thumb

Hiya, I have read up about DMF failure as it sounds plausible. Also, I listened to examples of the sound of a bad DMF, mine does not sound anything like that, you can barely hear anything. I am very concerned having read, on another forum, of others having similar problems and replacing everything right up to the engine and still having the problem, I suppose it's a good job I am a mechanic by trade, at least it wont cost much to waste my own time chasing this problem. Thanks for your input.

I've had something similar in my 5 pot D4 Volvo...

It was a vacuum valve on the pump. At tickover the EGRs would rattle slighting due to the valve not functioning correctly . When driving, under load and low RPM, a slight shudder in top gear . Fine on the flat. All now gone.

Ever seen what’s left of the gearbox when the DMF let’s go?

I had the shuddering which normally happened when reversing the vehicle uphill.

New clutch unit etc solved the issue
