Usually there is a Part Number stamped or painted on.

Possibly this one, just check length + NM rating from the old one with supplier:

Always best to change in pairs

As a side link. Anyone know if they sell the actual wooden bed slats. 3 of ours need replacing (don’t ask!)?

they are surplus so yes, can you collect or do they need posting.pm me
Do you still have any of the original wooden bed slats as need to replace a few of mine soon?

Old post I know but the above-mentioned gas struts are the external ones fitted to the manual roof of a VW California Beach / Coast and not the internal ones that support the VW California bed. The part number for the bed gas struts is 7H7067081

Also Part No 15 here:

Hi, are they easy to replace, please? (Meaning the internal roof struts). One of ours seems to be leaking an oily substance and moans when we're raising/lowering the bed.
Thanks.

Yes the ends are both ball joints and just snap off. You have to raise the roof and It’s a bit tricky doing the bed end as there’s not much room for leverage against the bellows but I used a pry tool like the one on the right IMG_6515.jpeg

There is a metal spring clip on each ball end, if you get a small flat blade screw driver and push into the recess next to the clip and lever the clip up, it will raise up and hold in an unlatched position can get just be removed without having to pry it off.

Certainly our 17MY had felt wrapped around some of the joints, so i just removed the tape and put it on the new ones (which didn't come with tape)

See pictures and guide below, example is bonnet, but VW ones are the same.

Ok so typically we are away on holiday and one of our t5.1 gas bed struts has given up, we are heading through Rhineland pfatz and baden wurtenburg over the next couple of days, then to berchtesgarten, can any German friends / fans recommend a local supplier who could sell me a pair (and maybe help fit!)…. Many thanks in advance

VW Dealer - Part still available as it is the same on T6 etc.

Esp. as you are in Germany the will most likely get it next day and all it needs is two pairs of hands and a flat blade screwdriver.

Our gas struts have been noisy for a while now, generally embarrassingly loud in an otherwise silent campsite. I’ve been cautious about cracking out the GT 85 or similar. Anyone know about the correct way to lube them or perhaps are they on their way out as I’ve read numerous times above?
Thanks in anticipation folks

If mounted correctly rod down (which I assume you have never changed) then they shouldn't need or benefit from extra oil, we have had them be noisy sometimes heat related, but seemed to end in failure.

One of original set went weak after 4 years, I swapped the pair with new VW ones sourced from dealer. Last month one of these suffered complete gas loss.

The inconvenience is very high compared to the cost and ease of replacement, we ended up clamping the rod, but just to get us through the weekend.

I have just purchased 2 new pairs of non VW ones from ebay (Magneti Marelli) and swap to a new pair and intend to carry a spare in the van at the back of the kitchen next to first aid kit.

I hope this helps
