Hi all,

After years of big estates and SUVs we’ve finally taken the plunge and bought a VW California T7 Beach, due in the next week or two.

We went for the Beach rather than an Ocean/Coast as we see it more as a family people carrier that we can occasionally sleep in, rather than a full mini camper. Day to day it’ll mostly be family duties, school runs, bikes, dog, weekends away etc.

This summer we’re doing a 5 week European road trip and the California will be coming with us. At this stage we’re not actually planning to overnight in it on the trip, but the idea is to have the flexibility for day stops, making brews/lunch, escaping bad weather and potentially the odd spontaneous stop if we fancy it.

We’ll definitely be doing a few test nights at home first (we’re in the Lake District, UK) to see how we get on sleeping in it and whether it’s something we enjoy.

For those already in the California/camping world, what would you say are the genuine “must have” accessories or bits of kit for a beginner? I’m trying to avoid buying loads of tat we’ll never use.

Things I’m already thinking about are:
• Fridge/cool box
• Levelling ramps?
• Portable power / battery
• Chairs/table extras
• Storage solutions
• Blackout/privacy bits
• Cooking gear for simple lunches/brews

Anything you bought and now wouldn’t be without? Equally, anything everyone says you need but you never actually use?

Thanks

A newbie t7 beach owner here. I've spent around 30 nights in the car so far.
- fridge: a friend told me it's a must so I did buy one. It's nice to have a cold beer. But I wouldn't call it a necessity. I'm not sure if I'll tak it on all my trips...
- lev. Ramps: don't have, always find a way to park without them. Again, because space is restricted, I don't think I'll buy one. Unless I'd find a way how to mount them on the tailgate
- I have one, but need it just to charge ebike daily. Otherwise it's not needed. The leisure battery lasts day or two and charges within 15 mins. Especially convinient on my phev vehicle.
- I hate opening the tailgate, especially with a bike on a rack. I'm thinking to remove the chairs altogether, use the storage instead for something that I don't need very often and buy some ultralight chairs instead.
- storage sokutions: still need to figure out some. Ikea SAMLA 994.407.74 is an exceptionally good fit for me. A huge box and a good cofee table.
- factory blinds are fine. I just consider an external windshield cover because of better thermal management.
- jetboil is incredibly fast and it fits exactly into the little rear seat drawers. Plastic clever dripper is unbreakable, easy to clean, good quality cofee dripper.

What I still need to figure out:
- how to increase leisure battery capacity or how to charge power station from car faster (bluetti/ecoflow alternator charger?)
- some hooks into the awning rails
- perfect storage boxes that can be stored below the folded seats under the bed and behind the seats when in seating position. Optimal Size: 2* 24*40*29 + 2* 22*40*29 (or 23*40*26)
- maybe a starlink mount onto the top part of the tailgate?

We got our T7 beach at the start of the year and as with you it's a daily driver / family car (but we are going to sleep in it for 2 weeks in France this summer - going for sites which have your own bathroom / etc!)

So the absolute best best thing we bought are two of these:

Both of them slide perfectly into the space in the boot next to the fridge and we have all of our camping gear in them ready to go which is ideal for turning day to day into camping. They are remarkable value from that company as they come with the dometic soft bag inserts as well which all also come with an insulated sleeve for each and are worth more than the box itself! For 1-2 nights we use one of the larger soft cooler inserts with gel ice packs and so far we've easily kept everything we want cold without having to resort to an electric fridge. We do have an alpicool compressor from our previous caravanning days which we've used for a longer trip and are using this weekend but you absolutely can get away with a passive cooler for a couple of days which is much simpler.

I don't see the need for a portable power bank - the built in battery can manage a couple of days of normal activity in our experience and it charges up in minutes so even if you pop to a local shop / beach / etc it'll be fully charged by the time you get back to site.

Chair-wise - we've supplemented the tailgate ones with two folding camping chairs which go really small and fit into one of the go boxes mentioned above and all just sit around the VW table with no issues.

Cooking gear wise - I know people love their cadacs and we have one from our caravan days but if you're looking for something to supplement the VW pull out stove then we've just gone for a powerful backpacker type stove (one that sits next to the gas bottle, not on it) and a pan (or sometimes cast iron skillet) and a small primus kettle which boils in minutes. We've also gone all in on primus plates, bowls, etc which all fit into the drawer on the kitchen. We bought a small collapsible washing up bowl which sits in the space behind on the drawer for dirty bits. Finally - it's a bit of an expense but the front runner camp cutlery set has everything you need and also fits in the go box easily https://www.dometic.com/en-gb/product/camp-kitchen-utensil-set-kitc245 (we took out the cutlery tray from VW to have more space)

Currently using the built in blackout system, it's not great but it's fine - may get a screen cover (they seem to be de rigeur on here!) but one expense at a time

If you see a Fontana Red Cali in France with a UK sticker chances are it could be us although looking at French diesel prices half tempted to take the EV

Thanks for the replies some food for thought. Just waiting for a delievery date, was hoping it would have arrived in time for the few days of sunshine of the year we're currently getting in the Lakes.....

I have had my Beach for 2 years, absolutely love it and off on Sunday to do the NC500 in Scotland. I have found regarding storage my best buy are the Vanessa window storage bags, I got one for each window at the back, they are brilliant and hold a fair amount of stuff. Not cheap but well with the money! The Beach is fab, overnight stops but they come into their own for family days out, so comfortable for 5, take the fridge for snacks and endless cold drinks! Perfect!

Less is more. For what you’ve described, I’d suggest a fridge for storing food for lunches, some cutlery and cups, and a Jetboil/ equivalent for making tea/ coffee. Nothing else is really necessary.

Anything else - eg. a cooking stove - you can easily pick up on your travels.

VW were obviously so impressed with them that they make their own and include 2 of them with the T7 beach
