I thought I'd make a thread to share what I'm doing with Home Assistant and my California, and encourage others to also share their setup, ideas, issues, etc. relating to Home Assistant.

So, here's a couple desktop screenshots of my dashboards (obviously these just scale down to 1-column on a mobile device):

Like most smart home apps, I break my setup into, and have summaries here, for Power, Climate, Lighting, Security, but unlike most actual homes… Location. The Power stuff is a combination of Victron and EcoFlow which I'll go into a bit later. The Climate section is multiple temperature and humidity sensors, and CO2 + PM sensor. Security is based on a bunch of zigbee motion sensors. Lighting is all after-market smart lighting. Location is using the GPS receive in my router and tracking the van's location as well as my personal location relative to the van, as well as whether it's in motion, etc.

The Power dashboard is pretty detailed. I break down the three battery systems: the factory Leisure (via a Victron SmartShunt), an EcoFlow Delta 3 (in the boot, mostly running the fridge and more powerful inverter) and an EcoFlow River 3 with Extra Battery 300 between the front seats (does not hinder rotation). I can control all of the relevant EcoFlow features as needed, I use automations to make sure all 3 batteries get charged by solar, the alternator and shore power (via the Delta 3). and I have some useful charts on the right to observer solar and charging data/behaviour.

This is my newest Dashboard I've been working on, meant for car / van data. This data comes from a WicanPro OBD device permanently connected, which is designed to communicate with Home Assistant over WiFi. While I have basic stuff like RPM, KPH and Odometer, I was able to get a bunch of data related to the DPF reiteration, and charted and learned from it, and I now get a warning on the dashboard as well as a notification when the car is about to do a DPF regeneration.

The other dashboards aren't worth going into this level of detail.

To pull it all together, I have a Netgear M7 Nighthawk mobile router, which is also a WiFi base station. I have a Raspberry Pi 4B running Home Assistant next to the EcoFlow Delta and router in the boot (connected via ethernet). I also have a ZBT-1 Zigbee Coordinator to connect to most of my temperature sensors, buttons, switches, etc.

Integrations I'm using:

Victron BLE: Connects via Bluetooth to SmartSolar & SmartShunt
HA EF BLE: Connects via Bluetooth to EcoFlow Delta 3 and River 3.
WiCAN: Connects via WiFi to WiCAN Pro OBD II dongle.
SmartVan GeoLocator: Made by SmartyVan (an incredible YouTube channel - check it out!!), makes it super easy to get reverse GPS lookup and set GPS of the Home Zone for weather and more.

My next, and ultimate goal is to get into the CanBUS network between the main controller and the overhead display. Once I do that, I should be able to replicate anything the overhead display can do, but from Home Assistant. If anyone has ANY insight here, that'd be grand.

What are you doing with Home Assistant? Got any projects on the go? Show us your dashboards!

Clever stuff. Love the regen graph.

Nice! Had wondered where you were getting the car data from. I've got the VW integration configured but for an ID Buzz, not the Cali, unsure how much data is available. I run a gl.inet Splitz AX (GL-X3000) in the van which automatically creates a VPN tunnel home so I can run this at home without needing to run HA locally.

Interesting. Is that the VW GoConnect integration via HACS? Something else?

We are so starved for options in Australia. We can't get Coasts or Oceans (Australia requires a sliding door on the passenger side). While we get fairly optioned-up Beaches (electric roofs, aux heaters, etc.), I don't think our vehicles have any connectivity (no SIM, no WiFi button). The app that uses the WiFi button (Cali on Tour?) isn't even available on our App Store to try it out or retrofit the hardware.

I’m using this one https://github.com/robinostlund/homeassistant-volkswagencarnet but it uses vw connect. Standard on I think all vw’s now in the UK. Normally 2-3 years free then you have to pay.

You can’t control the Cali side from it though. Only The WiFi button (Cali on tour) but to my knowledge it’s all local. I don’t think anyone’s attempted a HA integration for it yet. Maybe something I could attempt to vibe code with Claude one day ☺️

It’s not all bad in Aus though, I understand you guys can get the GC600’s in 4motion!

What controls / sensors do you get? Do you get door open/lock status?

While I've definitely seen 4motion Crafters, I'm pretty sure VW AU doesn't sell any Grand Californias here.

Yes you get door lock/unlock plus a few other things. However it depends on the van having a robust connection to VW's servers which, er, it doesn't always have...

Hi,

great work!!! nice idea with obd, it would be another step :)

Here I would like to share my project with HA a GC 600 2020.

I combined HA, inet2mqtt, can bus VW communation, Mikrotik, RB PI, ESP32, MQTT, phyton3 and more stuff...

Im able to see and control TRUMA heating
see water levels gray and fresh
battery and charging status
GPS, speed and ASL
gyro data with graphics (here I created holder for gyro)
gas level (here I created weight with ESP32 program in phyton3, more in picture)
and many more stuff.

does some one facing with can bus communication in VW?

thanks

Josef

Wow, not just status but you can even remotely lock/unlock. Shame about the stable connection. Wish I could access that service.

This is amazing!!! Bravo! Hugely impressed by the gyro and matching images, but it’s _all_ really impressive.
