Although there are numerous posts on this topic, having read through them all we can't match any issues with ours.... so here goes....

We are planning to head to Spain in our California T6.1 MY21, but we have ongoing issues with the electric sliding door, which will make it impossible to drive that distance (it has been in the van centre countless times since we bought it new in 2020, for similar issues, but I won’t get into the backstory unless I need to do so).

In summary, the current problem is that the door will sometimes appear to try to lock (or unlock, we’re not sure which) itself when in motion. Originally on a slight uphill slope at slow speed. We've tried all the combinations of turning off the electric door, automatically locking when driving etc. None make a difference.

In itself this is just an annoyance, but recently it's happening much more frequently and been joined by the audible and visual warning on the dashboard (showing the door is open) continually going on and off making driving impossible.

It's been at a VW van centre for the last week. They can see the problem, but tell us they are unable to fix it as their computer can't diagnose the fault. They are saying that the door fits well and that the door sensors are working properly. Other than that they are struggling to identify the cause.

Perhaps unrelated, but worth mentioning, is that since the problem escalated the van alarm has been set off a few times for no discernible reason and also the customisable dashboard display has reset to default on starting the engine, but then reverted to the customised setting the first time the door locking problem appears when in motion.

We daren’t head off on a long trip under the current circumstances. If we could even just turn off the dashboard warning we could probably live with the rest until the fault became more obvious. On a previous trip the door locked itself and wouldn’t unlock again for the rest of the trip…which also adds to our nervousness.

Any ideas or inspiration would be extremely helpful!

Find a garage that knows what they’re doing!

At the very least get it disabled/power supply disconnected.

Hi Katrina. We had technical problems with our sliding door as well and I recognise a part of your story. We drive a 2020 T6.1 Cali Ocean Edition. Our (experienced) dealer referred us to a VAG electrics and software specialist. But they had a hard time fixing it, the issues remained while they tried different solutions. Among other things, they replaced all the (electrical) parts in the sliding door related to the soft close functionality. In the end, after they updated the car software associated with the child’s lock, the problem was solved. Maybe this can help you in your contact with your dealership.
Kind regards from The Netherlands.

Hey, thanks so much for your reply. With the numerous sliding door issues we have seen the child light flashing, so this sounds like it could be a solution, I hope so....

I'll ask the dealership to try that, many thanks again!!
