Hi all,

I'm planning to fit an aftermarket roof rack to my Grand California 680 and from what I can see, the headliner/roof fabric will need to come out completely to access the roof structure properly.

I'd really appreciate advice from anyone who has done this or has knowledge of the process:

1. What's the correct removal sequence? (e.g. do the side trims, grab handles, light units or other fixtures need to come out first?)
2. Are there any areas that are particularly awkward — hidden fixings, adhesive sections, or anything that's easy to damage?
3. Can the headliner be refitted afterwards without any specialist equipment, or does it require a trim specialist?
4. How would a VW dealership approach this job, and is it something they'd be willing to do on its own as a standalone job?

I want to make sure I go into this with a clear plan rather than risk damaging anything. Any advice, photos or links to guides would be fantastic.

Many thanks!

It’s worth investigating if the roof is strong enough, it’s not steel but fibreglass and bonded to steel of van body.
I doubt a VW dealer would do this type of work, a motorhome/caravan fitter converters a better bet
