Duvalay "VW Campervan Pop Top Mattress Topper" - safe to leave up top?

Is this from personal experience of this particular topper?
I have tried something much thinner than 2.5cm /windscreen cover and it wouldn’t close properly
You really want that roof closed properly with no strain otherwise you could end up with expensive bills from either leaks or broken mechanical/hydraulic mechanism

Please add more detail : T5 with iso top installed or only original matress ? What kind of windscreen ?
It is certainly possible to leave something thin on top of matress. In T6.1 less than earlier models but iso top MKVI with frontside in place is no problem.

I have the Duvalay 2.5cm mattress topper and unless you remove the OEM mattress, the roof will not fully shut with the Duvalay up there.

Mosquito screens for sliding windows under the mattress, carefully stacked on the froli springs? Just asking for a friend. Please say yes.
Yup, mine are up there under the mattress side by side

Controversial, but, yes, probably right. They stack so nicely and because there is more room in the very middle of the roof I thought that might be the way to go. I’ll have words with my friend.

1 kept in the bottom of the drawer under my wife’s clothes. The other permanently attached to the window above sink for the last ten years.

Is it this specific "campervan pop top topper"? This one is slightly narrower, with cut off corners at the rear, and duvalay do explicitly call it a topper, not a matress, and say it will work in the Ocean, which I have. Anyway, I will soon know for certain...

I'm using a self inflating matress on top of the spring (the plastic square ones; T6.1 Ocean 2023) and that closes fine with my sleeping bag on top of it, but nicely in the middle, leaving the sides free for the side canvas. If the sleeping bag is spread out to start, apparetly, sometimes one side does not close perfectly and I have to retry.
I'm now in the process of installing an Iso Top. I'll see if it still closes with the sleeping bag in it ..
I installed the Iso Top Mark V now, and the self inflating matress is an Easy Camp, about 2cm high. I laid down on the matress to push as much air as possible out of it, and closed the valves then.

The roof closes nicely. I didn't try with my sleeping bag yet, will do soon.

On second thoughts, maybe I should leave the valves of the matress open, so that the roof can compress it when lowering. That's probably a better idea.

I use a Flextailgear mini pump to deflate in situ and my Sea to Summit mattress remains fully deflated in the roof zone for many months. Leaving space (with no OEM mattress) also for a camping duvet evenly spread over.

I just ordered such a pump :) ! I was thinking about buying one for other purposes anyway !

Thx,
Stefan.

Not good news. The topper arrived today, I gave it about 3 hours to partially expand and then gave it a try in my pop top. Total failure. Just before the front clamped shut, the back popped up. So I pulled the topper forward to hang over the gap by about 10" (to reduce the material at the back) and it again popped up at the back before the front could clamp down.

Given this was with the topper only partially expanded it clearly won't be any better when fully expanded.

So now we need to decide whether to keep it anyway, and accept having to remove it every time. Or, return it and buy the 2 narrow 5cm (but more expensive) toppers. More comfortable, perhaps, but even more bulk to pack in the boot when driving.

Very disappointing given Duvalay say "Designed to fit the Volkswagen California Beach, Ocean, and Grand California, its slim-profile design allows it to remain in the pop top during travel, reducing storage requirements." and repeated this to me on the phone.

Note: mine is 2021 6.1 Ocean. Maybe Beach or the older 6.0 had more room?

Duvalay also say on their website "Designed specifically for VW California pop tops, the topper features a precision-cut shape that fits neatly within the roof bed area. It will fit in the Beach, Ocean and Grand California pop tops. Its slim-profile 2.5cm design is one of its biggest advantages, allowing the topper to remain in place when the pop top is closed. This eliminates the need to remove and store bulky bedding every time you travel, making setup and pack-down quicker and easier than ever."

Clearly wrong

Thanks for taking the time to let everyone know.

I don't know about this specific topper, and it's of course a very personal thing for everybody, but is this on top of the original mattress ?
I'm asking because I use my Easy Camp self inflating mattress directly on the bed springs, and that works perfectly and I sleep fine. It's about 2.5cm also.

May it will be fine to use the topper alone, or is that what you tried ?

No, I wanted this to be as duvalay described, a topper, on top of the original mattress. I may give it a try on its own, but I am sceptical it will be comfortable enough

Sorry to hear it doesnt fit on top of the original mattress as suspected but yes worth trying without the mattress to see if more comfortable.
