Duvalay "VW Campervan Pop Top Mattress Topper" - safe to leave up top?

Duvalay say this topper, being only 2.5cm thick, can safely be left in the pop top when it is closed. However, they do not say whether this is on top of the VW original pop top mattress, or in place of it. If it can be left up top on top of the original mattress, at "only" £163 it looks ideal for both comfort and ease of use. But if it replaces the original mattress I think it will be too thin for me by itself.

Does anyone have any experience using this?

I think you will find there is literally no space for anything ontop of the OEM mattress. We store just the side window blinds up there. Its incredibly tight - just lower the roof with the sliding blind open and see for yourself.

I agree it is tight, but I wonder if Duvalay think their topper will be safely compressed in the available space on top of the VW mattress. Or do they presume their mattress will replace the VW mattress? Afterall they do desribe their product as a topper, not a matress. I wish they had been clearer on this.

I’d read their claim as you do, adding the topper to the oem mattress. But, if they have tested it (that’s a big “if”) which bed spring variation did they test it on ( current plastic springs or previous wooden slats) ?

Rather than dismissing Duvays claims outright it would be good to get some concrete answers from them. Maybe their media/ marketing dept? It would be a game changer if a 25mm topper can be left in situ.

I’m not brave enough to do this test myself!!

If you don’t have anythng else like iso top upstairs I believe it is safe to do the test. Worst case roof does not close completely but nothing destructive or damaging. Did this before in our T6, testing different toppers and even sleeping bag for go /no go test.

She also said that if it does not then I can return it for a refund, though I will need to pay the cost of returning it, which I presume won't be cheap.

Still considering my options, as I also like the look of their sleeping bags, though I do wonder whether the integrated duvet is so large that 2 of them side by side in the pop top will be too much.

We have one, definitely worth buying anyway, if it did fit up top would save us a load of space. Never tried. It’s tight up there.

This what the lady I spoke to said to me, almost verbatim. I said mine was a california ocean and she replied that "should" be ok. Maybe it is the custom conversions they are unsure about?

I have ordered one for delivery within the next 2 weeks. I will report back

I'm using a self inflating matress on top of the spring (the plastic square ones; T6.1 Ocean 2023) and that closes fine with my sleeping bag on top of it, but nicely in the middle, leaving the sides free for the side canvas. If the sleeping bag is spread out to start, apparetly, sometimes one side does not close perfectly and I have to retry.
I'm now in the process of installing an Iso Top. I'll see if it still closes with the sleeping bag in it ..

We use a Duvalay mattress downstairs, on our T6.1 which is brilliant. Upstairs its the original mattress but I use the narrow Duvalay sleeping bag, which has its own memory foam mattress. The sleeping bag is very comfortable and easy to adjust the amount of covering for different temperatures. I use the highest tog filler. The sleeping bag is quite bulky and I use the Duvalay nylon zip storage bag to keep it together

You'll be lucky with the duvalay, I do occasionly leave a fully deflated sea to summit self inflating mattress up top [ 1.5 cm ] and sometimes it closes and some times not.
by closing thats both ram locks on the front engaged [most important] if they do theres usually a 1 cm gap at the rear between seal and van roof.

Having just bought our Cali several years back I left what I thought at the time to be a relatively thin duvet up there and got a massive shock after driving off and reaching 60 mph the front of the roof starting banging alarmingly…! I would not risk it - ours certainly doesn’t have space for our Duvalay on top of the VW mattress and yes you need both for a really comfortable sleep

VW make it clear that nothing should be left on the bed when the roof is lowered, this I understand is to prevent damage to the aluminium roof, which could potentially prove expensive, and void any warranty, if the roof is forced down onto bedding left in situ?
I'm not brave enough to test lowering onto my Duvalay, so I roll it up and put on shelf behind back seats.

leave a vango rock n roll up there, i deflate it with the tempest pump and its thinner than the original and more comfy when inflated. I also leave a matress cover and a sheet on it but I wouldn’t leave it up there with the original in place.

I ordered the matress on Wednesday 6 Aug, so expect to receive it by Wed 20 Aug. Note that it is slightly narrower than the standard matress, with cut off corners at the back, so it does seem they have done what they can to make it fit. I will post again after I try it. Wish me luck.

Good luck will be interested to hear what you think - because I have the Isotop fitted I dont think I could squeeze that in too!

Don't forget that the reason you're buying the topper is that the standard matress is too soft. I reckon that the topper will just compress the matress when the top goes down.
Having said that, I was looking at the idea of replacing the standard matress with TWO of the 2.5cm toppers. Maybe too expensive an idea though?

We have both Duvalay sleeping bags & a topper, which are excellent, however not wishing to tempt fate we wouldn’t consider leaving either or anything else in the pop top.
