We a VW California 2008 with a webasto heater. A few weeks ago I posted because the heater wouldn't go on.... lights flickered and then shut down. People suggested an earth shunt.
We downloaded the guide, read all about it, took the cool box out but then chickened out and asked the local garage to fit the earth shunt and check all the fuses, because - as we were doing that - the van then wouldn't charge. They did this, checked all the fuses and identified that the fuse on the rear leisure battery had gone and one also under the bonnet. They also fitted a new control panel (off eBay). They have come to the end of what they can do but now we can't access the heater at all. The control panel now says 'heating not possible'. The heater did work once a couple of weeks ago, but then went really hot and wouldn't turn down, then when we tried to alter it, it went off and then wouldn't go on again. It looked like it would, then blowed out cold and the lights flickered and then went off. All the fuses have been checked. We have 2 brand new leisure batteries. The control panel just says this. The garage feel like there may be error codes behind this and that I need to take it to a webasto heater specialist. They say I might have flooded it. Any ideas good people?

This is very useful for reading and resetting error codes. I’ve had mine for ten years and it’s often helped me diagnose stuff. Whatever error code it reads you can then reset it and/or Google the code and on one of the dozens of VW forums find advice on what the cause is and what to do.

But do the above first.

Works well on the vehicle BCM/vehicle computer.
Unfortunately the Hydraulic Roof/Fridge or Webasto Parking Heater are on a separate system.

It says no errors
There are 3 plugs into the rear of the Control Panel. They must be reconnected in the correct order otherwise the Parking Heater is NOT recognised.

Note : from a V W forum someone said "Just a tip for anyone thinking o f removing their control
panel, make sure that when reconnecting the plugs at the back, you reconnect the smallest plug
first. Apparently i f you don't d o this the unit will fail to recognise the heater and you will have to get
V W to recode the unit. I did as he said and everything is working fine."

I think I need a VW specialist now I'm in ormskirk, west lancs, if anybody knows of anything. we got our van back to the point where we were yesterday but just gone out to try the control panel codes. We got a 2001 error code and the heater control was flashing. we then thought ok what's going on with this? try to start the van and the battery was completely flat. AI says this is because the heater has been constantly trying to go go all of the time and so this been messaging to the engine which has drained our main battery now. So we thought right let's try and plug it in at the back and charge it again, but now it won't charge again for anything. So we've got a completely dead van on all three batteries and the heater error code constantly going. Can anybody help us?
