I’ve gone to renew my insurance and declared a couple of modifications ie. a front splitter and side bars and my insurance company refused to insure me with the modifications on.

Has anybody else had this trouble and could anybody recommend an insurance company which allow modifications like these?

This is what you get for being honest :(

Great - who are/were you with?
Safeguard. They were put on the van last night but my husband removed them as soon as I put the phone down from them today (luckily he was at home). I honestly didn’t think they would be problem.

We are living in a computer says world.

I did an online comparsion and declared my modified suspension. Not interested. One of the reasons why I stayed with CCC for so long, as I went through all this and they were happy that I was covered.

Declared my modified suspension to Comfort and they nearly passed out....min 15% increase and we want to see photographs on each corner, it was like a Harry and Paul comedy sketch........

Im with Admiral, and declared all my mods, e.g. upgraded LED headlights and tail lights (the light units not just bulbs) front splitter, and they werent interested in them, said it would all be covered (I assume because they didnt have a drop down option for them?)
I also declared the solar panels and towbar, but because its insured as a campervan, thats all covered under the campervan classification.
I tried a quote with Howden Modified Van specialists, declaring everything, but my current insurer Admiral was still cheaper so stayed with them.

Arian Flux seems the best for the real non standard stuff like Q plated vehicles, Kit Cars, and the like. Personally if the bars were from VW or look like the ones VW supply and tell them that they are VW accessories!

Does that then require you to tick the 'yes' box when asked the 'Have you ever been refused cover?' box on insurance questionnaires?
Usually ticking that box eliminates 90% of your potential options.

It's "unable to provide a quote" otherwise virtually everybody would have to tick that - just try a comparison site and see how many companies won't provide a quote because you don't fit their algorithm.

I had no problem with them a few years ago when I declared. front and rear splitter/spoiler, wheel change, air suspension, remap. they just added £20 saying after 2 changes that gets charged,

Remap, VW lowering springs declared with Admiral - no problem and next to nothing extra premium. Previously insured by LV, they were okay with the same mods too.

I have splitter, side bars, tailgate spoiler but all Sportline so VW not modified as far as I’m concerned. As said previously VW optional accessories

If fitted pre-registration by Factory or Dealership then they are not considered a modification . Fitted Post-Registration they would be considered a Modification and might or might not be charged for by a premium adjustment. As they are a VW Option they probably wouldn't be charged for BUT in the event of a claim it could be problematic. Insurers look for any excuse when assessing a claim.

Were they added from as delivered factory spec.?

I was looking at a VW Caravelle that the dealer fitted a sport line front bumper, side bars and a rear spoiler admiral wanted another £80 per year for the mods.

They look at the accident repair cost of those add ons.

That’s interesting. I have declared a number of items on my Cali through Safeguard. Some when I took out the insurance and some a few months later. I didn’t have any issues. Did they say which item they couldn’t insure or was it just all of them?
