I’m on a cross Europe drive right now and the van has a terrible smell. At first I thought it was shoes, but can’t don’t the culprit.

It’s been cold and windy at home so I’m wondering if something found shelter but ultimate demise in the van. I can’t see anything in or under the van, but perhaps someone else has had this? Any hiding spaces I’m missing?

Though maybe it’s the propane? It does feel like it’s coming from that area. Different smell than rotten eggs though

So this ended up being something with the propane. After closing the gas at the bottle the smell went away.

Going in for service this week and will ask what in particular happened.

Will be fascinated if you can find out what it is, not aware that propane goes off?

Only travel with the gas bottle turned off. Do not leave the bottle on, even if its switched off by the cooker

In the event of an accident, leaving the bottle on could make the situation worse.

Once had the issue that after I had extracted the bottle (to run an exterior gas grill), I reinstalled it and there the rubber ring has fallen out of the connecting piece where it's screwed to the house which runs into the van. Caused the gas to vanish over the night - luckily not into the van, but to outside through the hole at the bottom of the compartment where the bottle sits in.
Not exactly your issue, but maybe a connection inside your van is loose.
Found the rubber ring down in the bottle's compartment when examined why bottle went empty, reinstalled it and was fine after having refilled the bottle (yes, refilled, I have switched to special bottle with special vent which allows refill from ordinary "bigger" gas bottles, can be done easily when you find other camper around you who is willing to "donate" from his bottle for a beer in exchange or so).

If its a rotten egg smell, it could be your EGR valve. We had a similar issue last year travelling back from Italy. Eventually the engine warning light came on, each time it did the van went into limp mode. As a quick fix, the warning light could be turned off by stopping the vehicle and turning off the ignition. We managed to get home okay, but a new EGR valve wasn't cheap but it solved the issue. There are other threads on this site which refer to EGR valves.
