Hi, my T5 2008 California has just been returned to me having had a major service and expensive exhaust manifold replacement. Started it this morning and immediately had a coolant warning light and STOP warning message. Not being a mechanic just wondering what could be the issue. Coolant temperature gauge looks fine. Is there a specific coolant required to be topped up? Can’t believe this wasn’t checked as part of the service.

Quite probably an air lock that has cleared, thus reducing the level in The system.
Vw spec will be in the manual. (Pink coolant probably)
Top up the expansion tank, run it and check it daily & top up as required. Should sort itself out quickly, if not take it back to where the work was done.

Advise the company immediately and ask what action thay suggest ^^^^^

The coolant system should have been pressurised when filling, to remove air from the system, removal of the manifold would mean the coolant needed to be filled.
TBF even VW struggle with air in the system and they have the special equipment specified by VW. (Pressure fill)

Edit - this should help:

Thank you. I’ve checked the coolant level which is well below minimum so I’ve ordered the correct coolant to top it up. I’m annoyed the level wasn’t checked during the service, I would have thought that was fundamental!

It probably was but an Airlock cleared during the journey back to you. It happens.

The Transporter is renowned for air locks in coolant .

Your van may nave left the garage showing a full coolant level, once an air pocket has moved (vented ) it can cause the coolant level to drop significantly. Speak to the garage, they should be able to re assure you
