Just wondering, now they have been around for a little while, any experience or recommendations for composting toilets in your beloved Californias? Thinking it may be useful to be free of Elsa points?? IMG_0740.jpeg

Look for trobolo on this foum and start reading..
Using it for more than 2 years and very happy with it sitting under the sink (when not in use )

we have these; https://trobolo.com/nl/products/wandago
Advantages:
- it fits in the cupboard under the cutlery drawer.
- You can place it on a platform (the gray container) so that the height corresponds to a normal toilet.
- You can use the gray box for something else.
- Fits in the suitcase under the bed end.
- The toilet paper and bags are incorporated in a reservoir in the lid.
We take a supply of sawdust with us for this toilet (sold for rabbit hutches,..., is much cheaper than what Trobolo sells and I think it is the same).

Yes, search for Trobolo and you will see a few recommendations from me! Very happy with mine too. It’s a good solution for the California especially if travelling to places where there are no waste points.

We have a Trelino S, which we’re very happy with. But to be honest, the Trobolo looks better in almost every respect - and is cheaper too.

The only thing that’s better with the Trelino is the aesthetic. It looks like a storage box with a nice wooden lid. While the trobolo looks very much like a plastic toilet. So we’ll often have our Trelino out and use it as a stool or a step ladder.

But unless that really matters to you, the Trobolo is a better bet.

You can’t get a composting toilet for a small camper, due to size but I like many have a separating loo (Trobolo) and have found it perfect for the Cali.

Another vote for Trobolo. Easy to use and fits well in various locations. The ability to set the height at 405mm is a real boon. Just make sure it sits level!

Thanks everyone, had our first camp at the weekend and I hated using the chemical loo now! I have gone for the Trobolo Wandago - well excited, thanks again.

Starting to think about getting one of these. Downside is we’ll lose a cupboard we store a lot of food, wash up bits, all important tea coffee spices etc. but also keen to hear…

Where are people keeping the bag of litter/sawdust? Conscious of it getting everywhere in the van and if we’re going away for a family 4 week Europe trip (with 2 little kids) space is in big demand!

We used to keep it in a large plastic food container (the type you use to keep leftovers in your fridge) so it was safe and leakproof.

But TBH, we're no longer using litter or sawdust. It's quite a faff. With a composting toilet in your van, pooping will only happen very rarely and for emergencies only. And when that happens, you put the bag straight in a bin as you would of a doggy bag (or burry it if you're in the middle of nowhere).

The litter/sawdust is of most use for people using compositing toilets as their regular, full-time toilet. In this case, they also typically have an electric fan in there. The combination of the litter/sawdust and fan helps keep things dry and smell-free. That's not really needed for a composting toilet used in a California.

What we do these days is keep a big container of bread soda in the drawer under the rear seats and always keep a large spoonful of it in the poop container (and another one in the pee container). It does a wonderful job as keeping all smells out. And no messing.

We keep ours

in a Dunelm folding ottoman

In the living area right behind the drivers seat. It also doubles as a foot stool or an extra seat.

As for carrying litter or sawdust they take up very little room and you can buy that stuff anywhere on your trip.

Easy, clean, No smells and a LOT easier to dispose of contents compared to the sh1tty mess of a chemical loo. AND you don’t have to worry about finding a specific chemical empty point.

I highly recommend one :thumb

We also have a trobolo wanda go that we keep under the sink and it turns out, that two of those ikea jars fit perfectly right next to the toilet and they fill most of the remaining space there (almost like it was made for this exact purpose :) )

We are family of three, using it as main toilet and the sawdust in those two jars (well compressed) lasts us about two weeks. And even after that, you can buy more in any pet store.
