Long time since I have posted anything on here.
Today, this light came up on the dashboard. I had it once before when I had about 130000km (81000mi). Now I have driven 217579km (135200mi).

The last time, I had to change the rear brake pads. Now it will be the front pads.
Luckily I am prepared and have bought a complete set of pads and rotors front and back.
I hope they will fit, because I bought them on Autodoc. But I chose ATE and TRW, just like most OEM parts.

Looks like you know it's brakes and are well prepared. :thumb
Were you really travelling at 60km/hr when you took that photo?

Yep. Almost home, no one around, so no problems.
That is why the picture is a bit blurry, and it's a road where you are allowed 70.

Edit: I'm going almost 50!

That's your brake pads warning. get them from Autodoc. check your discs too as they might need replacing.have they got a lip?

I'm not one to judge people but doing taking photos of a warning symbol that is basically highlighting you might have problems stopping quickly whilst driving at 50 at the same time does seem perversely ironic.

30mph…

I think he was asking advice on the warning light, not highway code rule book.
And the moment you start with "I'm not the one to judge", you are definitely judging.:thumb

I suspect that @RedWhiteMonkey was highlighting the perversity of photographing a brake warning light with a phone whilst driving, rather than judging. ;)

Yes, because when this light comes on, my brakes will suddenly stop working.

Anyway, changed the front brake pads and discs today.

ATE brake pads, TRW discs.

Not really a lip, but a slight bulge on the edges.
I didn't measure the thickness, I just replaced both pads and discs because I feel that is the best thing to do after 16 years and over 217000km.
The rear set is laying around waiting to be installed too, but there is no hurry.

Report back on how the brakes perform
I’d be interested to know who the oem supplier is for discs and pads.

Yes, your brakes obviously weren't suddenly going to stop working entirely. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree but people playing with their phones whilst driving is a personal pet hate of mine.

Have I read that right, this is the first replacement of pads and discs after 217,000km? Surely they must have been changed inbetween, that's a huge distance for one set of pads and discs.

I usually don't use my phone wile driving. But this time, there was no one around for miles, on a straight quiet road. I was going well under the speed limit of 70km/h. I wouldn't have done it with other cars, bikes, pedestrians around me.

You have read that right. This is the first change of front pads and discs in 16 years. The rear pads were changed at 130000km, only because the inner pads were worn to the warning sensor, but the outer pads were still over half width.
On the other hand, I wouldn't recommand anyone doing so long with their brakes like I do. There wasn't much bite on it anymore.

The performance will not be correct unless I change the rear brakes too. The rear discs must now be well under the minimum thickness, and the Ferrodo pads aren't that well anymore too.
But for now, I can stop the van when necessary, so they seem to do their job.

The OEM supplier for my van is Ate. It is stamped on the calipers on the front, and the pads were from Ate too.
Most used at VW are Ate, TRW, and for higher performance cars or bigger SUV's it might be Brembo.
That is why I went for TRW discs and Ate front brake pads. The rear pads I ordered are from TRW too.

Thanks for your feedback. Ill be aiming for ATE when time comes. I usually keep them in my basket on autodoc app for a week to get the cheapest prices.
Takes about a week in delivery but that's no problem.
Changing them is a sunday morning job on my drive

Make sure you take the right disc size and brake pads. I see you have the 180hp engine, so you will have the 17" brake system at the front. Mine is the 140hp, so it has the standard 16" brakes at the front. The back will be the same.

And while I was at it, I also replaced the rear brakes completely.

TRW brake pads and discs.

I feel a little more bite when braking, so that is good.
Now the brakes don't stick anymore. Before, the van could stay still on a very light slope after braking. Now the van rolls when releasing the brake pedal.
A change of brake fluid may help a little more too.

As I don't see a brand stamped in the discs, I don't know the brand of the discs. And the front brake pads are ATE.

Interesting the pads have Jurid and ATE on them. As I thought both manufacturers offered their own pads but appears they sale the same pad
