Always On Rear View Mirror Camera System.

[Phase one]

We have a Kenwood DNX525DAB which is a recognised VW approved option and we have it connected to a rear camera to give a permanent rear view on our T5.1 VW Wingamm Micros which has no through view.

It allows a full screen rear view or alternatively a 50:50 split screen view of rear view and Sat Nav and can have CD/Radio etc running alongside both.

The installer at Wingamm handily put a quick flick toggle switch on the dash so you can immediately flick to a full screen rear view from any screen you are in at the flick if a switch. Whole system works flawlessly.

It just took a little bit of getting used to not trying to look up for the conventional mirror.

One downside of a camera is that on unlit roads at night headlights from cars behind just produce dazzle and a mirror is superior.
Ok on urban lit roads and we find the camera’s twilight performance is brighter than a mirror.

I am sure there are other options with more recent headunits

Yes of course, Eibach have received TUV approval for retaining the original springs on the rear with the 30mm lowering springs just on the front. They confirm this will result in a 'neutral rake bias'. I have an email from them confirming this.

have to Disagree on that point. Unless you're reversing, and that's where the reversing camera comes in, it is more important to see which vehicles are approaching and/or in parallel lanes.
If you have got rid of the " optical" rear sag then that means your vehicle is nose down making the cabin rear view mirror less useful.

Oh I see thank you. I did find that Eibach produces a rear spring kit which will raise the back about 30mm, to be in line with the front. With Tüv approval. This will neutralise also the rear sag , since you'll always carry some weight at the back one way or another...

I'd be interested see a measurement from the rear wheel arch to ground once the original springs are back on. My van looks level & am booked in for the -30mm springs, if they do fronts only it will look wrong.

You don't by any chance know what the colour coding on your rear springs is?

There has been a thread on here concerning the fitment of an amazon type device that clipped over the original rear view mirror and connected to a rear aftermarket camera fixed to the numberplate (from memory). I had a similar thing on my old T4 Exclusive which was installed for reversing but could be left on permanently.
There was a slight delay (not great) and it was over bright at night, underbright during sunshine, so I made do with the side mirrors like the van / hgv drivers. I guess newer models have overcome some of these flaws.

You have a bit of information known only to you and someone at VW, that is news to all the VW suspension specialists but you are not prepared to share it?

It would be of great help to all those wondering if their suspension is faulty because it looks down at the back to have confirmation that it is indeed correct.

On the other hand does that mean that all of us with vans that look level are faulty?
A definitive statement from VW would at least confirm the manufacturers view.

T6 150 4M, my rear springs are 2 White.

I've had one of these 10 inch mirror dashcams in my work vehicle for a couple of years and wouldn't be without it. Front and rear dashcams seem to be a must these days. I mounted the rear camera on the inside of the boot as it was easier and would stay clean and dry. I fitted the same set up in the Cali last week and I'm very happy with it. The only problem is you will have to remove the mirror screen from your mirror when closing your windscreen blinds but it only takes a few seconds to do this.

Mate, if you can afford it and you want it and can make it work why not. Is having a better view of what’s behind you advantageous? Obviously, my van with the bike rack fitted and or headrests up, rear view mirror is pretty rubbish anyhow. Me, I use my wing mirrors. Legally you do not actually have to have a rear view mirror in the cab.
Think the better question maybe should be “how do I do it?“ not should I

Please don't delete it, could you transfer all the Saggy bottom / suspension posts to another thread. The OP has information that would be extremely useful to the whole T5 T6 and T6.1 community regarding the design of transporter suspension. Not just Vw California.

He is in receipt of an email that answers questions that all the suspension modifiers have raised & it would be a shame to loose that just because @rowles1958 has posted it in the wrong thread.

After all in the words of the OP "I thought the purpose of this Forum was to share knowledge and help people with all types of experience with Californias"
