Has anyone any knowledge or experience with a (carbon) hardside folding roofbed on a 6.1 California? You see them more and more on us and handbuild campers and ordinary roof tents for cars. A vertical operated one has much more space than a standard sloping bed. Curious!

Are you suggesting removing the existing roof and replacing it with a roof rack type tent?

Yes, those kind of "folding boxes" with fixed windows. Something like the pic, but rectangular and vertical operated. Dont know if it exists.1000083350.jpg

I see where you are going with this but, sounds like a good way to half the value of your van?

Do you mean a separate solid sided roof tent on top of the van or somehow replacing the popup on an existing van with something with this type of construction?

The former might make sense on a standard van seems a waste on a California. The latter sounds very expensive even if it is possible.

Replacing the popuptent. But in no way intending to wrek my Cali! Seemed more spatious and weatherproof... Thanks for sharing!

I assume you mean the existing pop-up roof on the California.

Never seen it done and I can't imagine how all that would fit into the existing mechanisms without major alterations. If, and I suspect it isn't, possible it would cost a fortune to do.

I can’t quite picture the logistics of it given you need some sort of base for the bed? It would only be any use if you could access it from the van.
You would effectively just be replacing the canvas and roof with one that raised vertically, all for a bit of extra room over your feet?
