Need to replace Media Unit in T6 Ocean - Recommendations?

Hi Everyone,

Two weeks before setting off on the NC500 and the VW media / head unit on our 2017 T6 Ocean begins misbehaving (Carista reports a module fault) and although most of the time it still works it also seems to get worryingly hot.

Rather than invite trouble miles from anywhere I'm hoping to replace it before we set off. The question is, what can I replace it with that's readily available.

Various posts here discuss several alternatives and I've considered Dynavin D10-T6 Premium which appears as if it should provide the same functionality as the VW unit and fit flush in the dashboard, but as with others I've so far looked at it won't integrate with the microphone above the drivers seat. Perhaps expecting an after-market manufacturer to build this particular interface into their systems asks too much, but if anyone has found and fitted one that does support the microphone I would be most grateful for their advice.

I cant give you any specific advise although I would suggest checking out the T6 forum. Aftermarket parts are more common over there and they have a lot of threads about stereos.

I have seen a member post recently about wanting to remove their Dynavin as they weren't getting what they want from it.

Also I can see you are in Derbyshire. DavTec is a trader over there and specialises in Transporters, he is in Chesterfield.

I recently replaced my head unit in my T6 with an Alpine Halo 9. It’s a floating fascia so not flush fit but I prefer the angle as it has less glare in bright sunlight. It integrates with my built in mic, reverse camera and all the steering wheel controls and DAB aerial. The only thing I’ve lost is the inbuilt sat nav but I use Apple CarPlay for that anyway.

Thank you Temporarysecretary for the DavTech tip - I'll give them a call, they're not far from me.

While I love the T6 forum as a trove for anything and everything technical much I admit does end up going slightly over my head. Those guys really are into their vans. This is where I found about the Dynavin system, although not the post about wishing to take one out ..

One of the few things I do like about the standard unit is the MFD navigation display and if I have to replace it finding one that replicates this has to be a priority, hence the Dynavin. I can live without the microphone, if needs be I'll roll the rear seat closer or just talk lounder.

Its going to come down to cost vs time vs desire. I may desire a floating display and a decent sound, but Mrs B voices desires for a new kitchen .. and we all know who's going to win. So the order of the day has to be something that can be plugged-in fairly easily, is generally simple and easy to use, and won't break the bank.

With luck DavTech might be able to repair my faulty unit.

I had an Alpine Halo 9 fitted by Dav-Tec in February of this year. He also fitted a remote receiver for my Webasto coolant heater(Available on Scandinavian spec vehicles) Top quality install, no hesitation in recommending them.

Looked at prices for some of the top-end kit e.g. Alpine and realised, crikes, if not careful this could easily go way way over budget ..

Some seem to love Dynavin and others don't, but many of Dellmassive's remarks in his post (thank you Temporarysecretary) I have to say ring true - need to give more thought to the Dynavin option and whether a floating screen without the glare might be wiser.

Whichever way I end up going its pretty clear rushing to get it done in two weeks could turn out to be the wrong approach and there are other things that have to get done too (such as midge proofing!) so for now we'll likely have to live with the tempremental VW unit, hope it doesn't die and come back to the thorny task of a replacement later. Knowing it might die hopefully lessens the pain slightly if it does.

On long journeys we don't use the satnav anyway and theres google online/offline maps for the last couple of miles to wherever we've going if needed. The radio would be missed, but can get by with BBC sounds, Spotify and Met office apps.
