The oil burst out of the ram on one side of the roof with a loud bang. We got back to the UK by lowering the roof and strapping it down. The VW van centre at Newcastle was useless and had no idea how to fix it. They want to take the whole roof off and charge us a future.
What we need is two new rams and maybe struts. The pump is working fine and is trying to raise the roof.
Any suggestions as to what we can do? T5 2007

Kernow Transporters is your best bet. Well used by Forum members.

Thank you, but we live in north Cumbria. We might give it a good, but its a long trip. I guess we will have to book it in first.

They have a campsite next door run by a family member. Unlike VW it would probably be fixed in less than a day and you would probably save a considerable amount.

There is info on the forum regarding replacing the rams. I’ll try and find the one I wrote with the process of replacing the ram and filling the pump. It’s a really easy job to do at home with no special tools required. You won’t need the struts either, replace the one burst ram and continue to use the other. As a preventive measure once done. The official advice VW were giving owners years ago before they changed the ram to a new version was to drill a hole either end of the protective cover cap and cover the plastic cover in heat absorbing tape.
One of mine blow a few years ago. I changed only the broken ram. Drilled the holes in both covers and put the heat absorbing tape on both covers.
As of yet the original ram is still fine. The original ram might fail one day. It also might not either.

Thanks for your reply, that sounds interesting. If you can find the original advice on how to replace the ram and fill the pump with oil, that would be great.

They sorted the same problem for me in 2022, well worth the long journey for the service and massive price saving over VW
