I have tried to sift through the threads but can’t seem to find any answers- I’m looking to buy a Thule or similar removable tow bar mounted 2 bikes rack - which one fits and without modifications allows access into the tailgate by tilting or otherwise? ( I know some fit with modifications but I’m wondering if any fit straight out of the box)

Thule Velospace XT3 works well. Allows the full opening of the tailgate. We also have the Spacemate drawer installed and this can still fully pull out.

I have the Thule Easyfold 3 - 2 bike rack purchased new earlier this year and is a cinch to fit having come from the tailgated bike rack also by Thule on a Caravelle, which also was faultless in 5 years of use . I haven’t fitted it yet to the California but is perfect on the car and it also tilts so you are able to open the tailgate easily.

Many thanks! That is exactly what I was looking to find out- we were considering getting a totalcool slide out drawer if we could find a towball mounted rack so your reply is double helpful- can I ask what towball you have?

I had a Thule model that worked with an estate car tailgate, but there wasn't clearance for my Cali tailgate to open.
I researched various options and came up with the Thule Velospace models. I went for the Velospace 3, although I only carry 2 bikes usually. This allows me to space the bikes so that they don't rub saddle to handlebar!
Also when shipped the rack didn't clear the door, but there is a simple position option to clear the door. This is explained in another thread here (sorry I don't have the link) and is not a modification, rather a 'setting' if you like.
It's not as neat as the Easy fold models when storing it, but that is a compromise.

Just my tuppence worth!

We've just bought a Atera strada dl3 which rotates and tilts as it slides away from the van. According to the Roof Box Company, it works with the Cali tailgate which is longer apparently than the Transporter tailgate.
We are fitting it for the first time later today so will let you know how we get on. We saw one demonstrated by a fellow Cali owner on site recently and were persuaded that it was the right bit of kit for us.
Will take 3 bikes but we carry 2.

We use the Diamant Pro user SG 2 plus bike rack. You are able to open the tailgate when the bikes are on and it also folds up so it can be stored in quite a small space. We found the added advantage is the it will also fold up whilst still attached to the towbar making access to the rear quite easy when you’ve set up camp.

Photos of the Altera Stranda DL3 at first attempt for your information. It doesn't rest on the ground when in full tilt position.
One key fits all locks.
With the 13 pin plug, we have indicators, hazards, brakes, fogs and reversing lights on the rack. Looks a good piece of kit.
Oh and it fits straight out of the box and only needs unfolding. Roof Box Co do a video on YouTube showing installation from the box.

A few pics to help. Bikes on with tailgate open. Bike carrier folded for when set up on site and bike carrier stored with bikes.
