I have one of these Outwell folding kettles:

IT is a good kettle, but it is hard to tell when it is boiling (the silicone body seems to adsorb the normal sounds and the steam is not always easily visible), has anyone got one of these kettles and found a way to do so? You cannot fit a whistle.

I found this, but am worried about it cracking:

We’ve had the same kettle since we started 10 years ago. Yes, I do wish that there was a version with an old fashioned whistle. However, the hob lid shows up the steam quite well.

Sometimes, for example in cold weather, but not always! Today, for example, on the Suffolk Coast in strangely unexpected hot weather, it was impossible hence my post.

They say that a watched kettle never boils. Perhaps that’s where you’re going wrong .

Sorry, less than helpful. I do hope that someone has a found a whistle to fit. Or, maybe a clever person can perform some 3d print magic and make a fortune. It sounds like there is a queue of customers forming.

Never felt the need for a kettle. We obvs carry pans so we just use one of those.

How much ‘space’ do these things actually save?

We like our folding kettle because it fits in the sink bowl with the glass sink lid closed for travelling.

Used it for over two years now and never felt the need for a whistle, but I guess if you forget to keep an eye on it, then it could be handy.

Ours is a Gelert one with yellow silicone material and it is translucent enough to see when the water is boiling.

Same here, 10 years use, we always stay close to pans and kettle during heating. Safety first.

To be honest: we turn off the gas just before the water boils. Isn't that the holy grail of water for tea? It's part of the holiday experience in Cali.

With my Outwell collapsible it is almost impossible to tell when that is, hence my OP. In all other respects the kettle is ideal - hence my reluctance to a change.

I do know what you mean.

I don’t like wasting gas, so I know just how much water to put in for our needs. This means that the kettle boils in roughly the same amount of time, every time. I’ve taken to setting a 5 minutes, 30 second timer every time we boil up, just as a safety net in case I forget to look. Of course, this doesn’t directly solve your problem. However, it should give you a starting point upon which to start closer investigations with a magnifying glass as you hunt for steam.

We’ve got one of those in the garage from our tent camping days, but for us the collapsible one wins. When we reorganise the cupboards we might have it back though. It’s a good kettle, but ours has a big melt down one side of the handle. I can’t remember how that happened, but worth mentioning if anyone is considering buying one.
