Received an e-mail this morning relating to a 'new' standby mode at £4.50 per month with unlimited low-speed data

'We’re reaching out to let you know the Pause feature on your plan has been updated. Pause now includes Standby Mode, which comes with unlimited low-speed data for GBP 4.50 per month, perfect for backup connectivity and emergency use. These updates will take effect in 30 days. All of your other plan features remain the same. You are able to cancel your service at any time for no charge. If you have questions, please see our FAQs or Terms of Service.'

Unlimited data has potential but it will be interesting to see what low-speed actually means......

Once you use up the 5GB of high speed data the speed drops to 500Kbps. Only useful for emergency phone connectivity and not much else.

About to get Starlink (full fat) for my cottage, I see they offer £300 off if you do 12mth subscription now.
Excluded some areas.
Anyone seen a better new price than £299 John Lewis and curry’s are doing.

This video is really worth watching as an illustration of what can be done on Starlink standby mode - better than I expected:

That’s actually cheaper than I pay Vodafone for broadband. Let us know how you go on will you my contract finish later this year so sounds interesting. Thanks.

I am thinking about getting a Starlink Mini for the van running in standby mode purely for providing backup when we can’t get a mobile signal. Just wondering if anyone has already tried this?

You'd have to pay the £50 for a first month's "full" subscription first before dropping down:

Can You Activate Directly onto Standby? No. Same as direct purchases — standalone Minis must activate on a Roam plan first. Standby Mode as a first plan is only available for Minis bundled with an active Residential service.

OK thanks, we could do a full month first as we are planning a 3 week trip to the Scottish Islands later in the year. I was really looking for any feedback on what you can expect/do with a 500Kbps connection. It will only be used when we have no mobile signal and want to pick up emails, texts and make phone calls.

I like this option, a fiver a month and always have a backup if required. Probably enough to make me finally buy one of the mini versions.

Those should be fine - although for emails if you're using web based email (, etc) then you might struggle - if you can connect a proper email client like outlook to your provider so it's just pulling the emails and not rendering the whole website you should get away with it.

Thanks for the info, that’s really helpful.

Have a look at this video

Looks like it will be more than enough bandwidth for what we want to do. I am very tempted to go for it now but don’t need it until later in the year. So I will wait until I need it and hopefully Amazon Leo will have come on stream by then as a comparison.

I like the idea of reliable internet in the van so I asked the Starlink BOT .. eligibility for a free starlink mini and the roaming service paused from day 1 requires first being on a Residential plan continuously for a year with no issues, or just being on a Residential Max plan (whatever that is). Must remember not to blot my copybook before July.
