WhatsApp Image 2026-02-17 at 18.29.22.jpegWe bought our TDI Ocean at the end of last year, 6 months old but only 96 miles on it, from Fish Brothers in Swindon. Part exchanged a T6 Beach which we'd had for 7 years beforehand. I thought I'd share a few thoughts after 2 months and just over 3,000 miles because I keep reading lots of negatives about the T7 on the forums, but actually our experience has been very straightforward so far.....

Worth saying that we use this as our family car for longer trips and holidays, but as with the Beach we will probably only use it for shorter camping trips, around various mountain biking things and sailing dinghy events.

So what's it like? Essentially really happy with it, feels really car-like and premium in comparison to the T6 and absolutely munches the miles on the motorway, super-relaxed and quiet. With Travel Assist it more or less drives itself. The beds are a bit narrower than the Beach (especially the downstairs one of course) and there is less storage space than a T6/6.1 Ocean, but on the flip-side the back seats are now just as comfortable as the front ones and the double sliding doors are suprisingly useful. Bit of a bummer not having the bike rack on the boot, but getting pretty deft with attaching the towbar-mounted Atera.

I was a bit worried about battery issues having read about them on this forum, but so far haven't seen anything odd. I turned off keyless entry as a precaution, and have left it off, and touch wood all seems good. Only thing that has gone wrong is a stone flicking up from a car in front and creating a big crack in the windscreen, and then a very protracted set of conversations with Autoglass convincing them that a 2025 Califonia isn't based on a 2025 Transporter!

So we're very happy to have made the switch, really suits the way we use the van, and plenty of trips already planned for 2026. Fingers crossed everything continues to be easy. Happy to answer any qs if you're thinking of buying a T7  .

You have clearly chosen your new Cali for exactly the right reasons; you know what you want from your T7 and it delivers. Nobody can adk for more from a new purchase, I reckon.
I suspect that had you wanted to use it for longer camping trips you might have found it wanting, indeed you have flagged a couple of limitations...and maybe a lot of the flack thrown at the new Cali is from those who want to use it as they have been able to use their Transporter based Calis.
Thanks for your review, I enjoyed reading it.
Enjoy your future adventures :thumb

I sat in a T7 Ocean for the first time yesterday at the NEC (Campervantastic Stand). I could really appreciate the automotive feel to the van, but as current owner of T6.1 and a 6ft 3" 100kg+ Partner my immediate and first impression was it is small. Especially after seeing so many ford/vw transporters on display I came away thinking although lovely it really is more car than van. In time my plan was to consider the T7 as my next move but, but I now think I will need to go bigger.

Thanks for the replies. Agreed, the differences between the T6 and T7 will work for some people like us but not so well for others.

And we like the colour too…..the good looks or otherwise of the new California seem quite dependent on colour and wheel choice!

Yes it’s a mini van.

We (couple and dog) used our T7 Ocean for a 5 week trip to France and Spain and it was great. I have never driven for such long periods (6 hours+) in more comfort before - and so economical. More long trips planned as well. I would encourage people to think of the T7 as good for longer trips as well. Of course, always best to try before you buy!

The long distance comfort is insanely good - especially on congested UK roads

Having read several topics here referring to the new T7 California, I recently visited a VWCV dealership. The salesman insisted there was no such thing and the new California’s are based on the Multivan which is a completely different vehicle to the T7. Is this correct and if so why do most people here call it a T7?

Tecnically a Multivan California but T7 is the obvious naming convention to continue. Difficult when searching for accessories as the new Transporter is also sometimes called a T7 as well and that isn't one either!

The Volkswagen Multivan, introduced in 1985 based on the T3 Transporter, revolutionized the van market by blending commercial vehicle space with passenger car comfort and modular,, flexible seating. It has evolved over four main generations—T3, T4, T5/T6, and the modern, car-based T7—becoming an iconic, versatile multi-tool for travel, business, and family, known for its longevity and "Bulli" DNA.

Hello @candy66, thanks for this post, I will collect my new T7 Ocean on Thursday. I read that you have the Atera bike rack, may I ask what model you have and whether you have e-bikes or know whether the rack would also be good for e-bikes? Atera writes to me that they only now make one model that is compatible for the T7, as they stopped producing the Strada DT2-3, but I can still find those online, so I am trying to get some information from people who actually have Atera bike racks.
Thanks!
Ciao!

Picked up our VW California T7 Coast(diesel) in February. France based. We traded it in for our Globecar Sportive based on a Fiat Ducato which we’d had for 8 years. The VW is an ex-demonstrator and came with many added extras, too many to list but basically is a couple of options short of the Ocean.
Only problem so far was an issue with the main battery which I got sorted when I drove it to the UK in VW commercial at Milton Keynes. Downsize compared to to the Globecar but a health scare made the decision for us as the VW is more practical for everyday use. Yes it has less space inside but we’re not big so easily fit downstairs and upstairs. Much less storage but we’re found we didn’t need much anyway even on long trips of up to 3 months, time will tell!
Took a drive up to Scotland from MK - 320miles with 2 shorts stops on the way up and the return trip. Easy drive and got 50mpg popping along at 65/70mph.
OH has adapted to the automatic gearbox, I was thrown in at the deep end when we collected it in Lille and drove back via Dunkirk, Dover and the M25 to MK.
Like to OP glad we made the change, just planning trips later in spring, summer and autumn. Happy, too, to share any info. Happy Camping

Hi Simona - we’ve got a Strada DL4. I don’t use it for e-bikes but unless they are very long wheelbase they will fit (my downhill mtb goes on fine). I think the max weight is 63kg so it wouldn’t take 4 e-bikes, but 2 at least. Happy riding!
