Control Panel Issues

Hi

I've had a look through the threads and although I some members have had similar issues none are quite the same as mine.

Whilst driving the van yesterday I noticed that the control panel was showing the roof as open ( it wasn't ) and there was an audible warning sound every time I moved off after lights etc.

I had a look at the van today and tried to open to roof, it wouldn't. I've checked the diagnostics log and the following faults were found, 3010. 5001, 1000, 4001, 6001. These cant be reset and the control panel wont turn off as the roof is showing as up.

I've checked the fault codes against a list supplied elsewhere on the forum and most of the seem to be fuse/short circuit problems. I've made a visual check of the fuses beneath the passenger seat and none seem to have blown

In a previous thread it was mentioned that turning on and off computer type thingys is a good way to reset everything. As I couldn't turn it off I disconnected it from the power ( by removing the control panel ). Once it was replaced the same fault codes appeared but now the display is flashing between the two pics attached.

As well as the roof not working, the fridge cant be turned on and off, however the heating still works and the temp settings can be changed.

For further info due to health issues the van was only used once last year for a short weekend trip, I'm not sure if this has contributed to the problems.

I've booked the van into a VW California dealer in Liverpool at the beginning of May but I would like to try and resolve the problem before then as i don't want to pay dealer prices.

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Probably a failed roof sensor. There's 4 . Vw will want to change the whole wiring loom. This is unnecessary and expensive . There's how to thread on here on how to change the sensors yourself

Thanks for the reply. I’ve seen that thread but I think there was no mention of the fridge not working etc.
I’ve read so many today I can’t remember what what said where lol.

Can you take a Photo of the "Hardware Menu" same menu list as fault codes.

it will look like this - perhaps photo with key out and another one with ign on

Ok,

So

AN0 - Battery Vb Sense - NORMAL
AN1 - Battery Current - NORMAL
AN2- Ext Temp - NOT NORMAL
AN3 - Waste Water - NOT NORMAL
AN4 - Fresh Water - Potentially NOT NORMAL
AN5 - FRIDGE TEMP - NOT NORMAL
AN6 - NORMAL
AN7 - NOT USED

AN8 / AN9 Roof Sensors
If the Roof ECU thinks the Roof is Open (Ign On) - AN8 will be about 108, AN9 will be ~255
If the Roof ECU thinks the Roof is Closed (Ign On) - AN8 will be ~255, AN9 will be about 108

If AN8 and AN9 with Ign on are both round 255, that indicates a fault and will result in the fault code 1000 - This is caused by both an Open and Closed Sensor being sensed at the same time.

My gut feeling is that this isn't classic roof sensor issue, just due to the other abnormal sensor readings, the roof sensors go into another ECU and then it sends signals to the control panel. so a lot less likely that there is a direct short.

Port F/Port H/Shft1/Shft2

These are incredibly complicated to decode, i would say from a quick review that these appear sensible and don't immediately suggest a Power or Fuse issue.

WHAT NEXT

I suspect you have a short circuit on either the Fridge / Waste Water/Ext Temp or Fresh Water sensor wiring (or sensor) and this is effecting a number of the input circuits.

I would start by unplugging One by One the sensors. I would start with the Fridge temp sensor, you access it via the hatch near the waste water valve. I would make sure the sensor wires aren't touching or melted - normally two thin black wires.

Water Sensors have 2 pin plugs just as they exit the tanks. Ext Temp is mounted in the undertray of the van next the the waste water exit hose (in fact the wires are wrapped around it) - There are instances of the external temp sensor being ripped out / falling out, including in floods. This can result in the wires and connector being dragged along.

If unplugging all the sensors fails to find the problem, then have a look at this thread which shows water damage to the Kitchen Equipment plug, all these sensors go through this.

If all else fails then I would contact Ed @ElectronicEquipmentRepair

Thanks for your help I will try and do what you suggest, if not I will contact ed.

Quick update. I took the van to a friendly vehicle mechanic today. He checked all the fuses with a multimeter and confirmed they were ok. He advised me to leave the control panel unplugged for 15 mins or so then plug it back in. I did this and it cleared all the errors apart from the roof which still isn’t working.
However I reconnected the control panel in the wrong order and now the heater is not recognised .
Two steps forward and one step back it seems.

I've decided I'm going to use Lambeth Cali's download instructions with my mechanic friend but does anyone know to to reset the heater code or is it a trip to the dealer ? I've searched the forum and am struggling to find an answer. Thanks in advance

Disconnect all the the control panel connectors. no need to wait 15 mins. Plug in the two small connectors then connect the large connector and then should be resolved when you switch on.

Have done that now thanks. All faults ( apart from roof ) cleared and both fridge and heating now working.

I actually managed to get the roof up and down again but saw that the pop top roof lighting isn't working.

I do love this van but its hard sometimes, I've had the awning seam split, the dodgy touch screen on the media system and now this. The love affair may end soon :(.

On the T6, the pop top lights aren’t linked to roof state at all.

Quick update. I've spoken with Mark Volksvans who has agreed to replace the sensors for me this week. He sent me the part numbers for the BMW sensors and I've ordered four of them from a local dealer for £58.51.
Thanks to @vbk1975 for your help.

Had the work today done by Mark@Volkvans and the sensors on the awning side were totally corroded, it appears as a result of the drainage channels being full of gunk and leaving the sensors damp.
Everything is working fine now and I'm a very happy boy.
For your info @vbk1975 the upstairs lights are now working as well. Apparently they are turned off by the sensors if the roof is lowered whilst left on to save the battery so the fault was affecting them as well.
Once again thank you for your help and time.
